I arranged for this water taxi to pickup me and my two teenaged grandkids at the train station to take us to the dock of our hotel. He was there right on time and it was a beautiful experience. I re-booked them for our return 4 days later. This is a $65 one way trip. When embarked we noticed a small fridge inside the cabin and we could see it held water bottles. My grandson got one of the water bottles and the boat driver very curtly asked what he was doing - grandson said he was getting a bottle of water and we would gladly pay for it. The driver very curtly replied "most people ask first before they get the water". Ok. So sorry, how much do we owe you for the water - no response was given. When we arrived at the dock of the train station - our driver began lifting our bags up to a man on the dock with a dolly cart. I thought how nice they have provided this service as well. I generously tipped the driver even though I thought him rude for embarrassing us over the water. We followed the man with our baggage for less than a minute walk up a ramp. We helped him take our bags off the dolly and I tipped him 5E. He says, no it's 20. I looked shocked and asked him to repeat because I was taken back. He aggressively said it is not enough - that I owed him 20E. I could kick myself now but I gave it to him. Since, I've heard that this has happened to others. And now I'm REALLY upset because i realize the driver of the water taxi company was part of this scam. He never once advised us that this was going to cost us so we could decide if it was worth it. I love Venice and have visited 5 times with never any experience like this. I hope this warning helps others avoid the same thing happening to them.
