🌴 Heat Hack: One-Day Beach Escape from Bangkok to Pattaya’s Wong Amat 🌴
April in Bangkok felt like walking inside a hair-dryer. By breakfast on Day 3 we craved salt water more than another temple, so we vowed: “Beach today or melt.” We self-planned a spur-of-the-moment beach run—no tour, no hassles, just two apps and a good map.
How we made it happen
• 📱 Opened Grab at 10 : 40 a.m. in Baiyoke Sky Hotel.
• 📍Address: Typed “Wong Amat Beach Pattaya” (that morning I googled cleanest beach on travel blogs).
• Accepted the quoted fare ฿1 800;
• Threw towels, sunscreen and small cash into a tote—no tour, no tickets, just go.
Total distance: 142 km; traffic: zero.
If you’re replicating
• ⏰ Leave before 10 a.m. to dodge lunch-hour jams.
• 🥤 Grab a 7-Eleven iced coffee at the on-route rest stop; driver won’t mind.
First Glimpse of Wong Amat
The taxi door clicked shut outside Surf & Turf Beach Club & Restaurant and thirty sandy steps later we were staring at empty, baby-powder sand and clear jade water—no jet-skis, no vendors, just a lone palm and an older auntie with sun-beds. We took 2 sun beds. We’d packed towels and I’d worn my swimsuit under my dress, so within minutes we were swimming.
Micro-plan for the sand
• 💺 Rent loungers right away (don’t remember exact price, pay in cash); auntie also sells ice-cold drinks.
• 👙 Wear your swimsuit under clothes changing huts are scarce.
From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. we swam, dozed, watched tiny crabs sprint, repeated. Shade from the club’s awning saved us when the sun peaked; the sea stayed bathtub-warm. AND THE MAIN POINT IS THAT BEACH WAS ABSOLUTELY EMPTY! We were totally alone (only auntie with drinks watched us). It felt like a private island—just us, gentle Gulf waves and the occasional hermit crab.
Keep in mind 🏊♂️ No lifeguards—stay within your depth.
At five we drifted up to Surf & Turf’s tables. While they were serving drinks, I was able to change my clothes in WC, no one said anything. Think hanging rope swings, pastel cushions and English-speaking staff who actually smile. Dinner was a knockout: salmon ceviche-style salad, fiery tom yam, stretchy-cheese pizza and two strong cocktails—easily some of the best seafood I’ve had in Thailand. The pièce de résistance? Watching a fire-orange sunset with feet still in the sand. Waves, music, zero city noise—perfection.
The Ride Home
Grab was sleeping in north Pattaya after dark, so at 6 p.m. we opened Bolt. Ten minutes later a car pulled up; by 8 : 20 p.m. we were showered back in Bangkok and even made a 9-o’clock cabaret.
