North Wales: Portmeirion - The Colorful Fairytale Village! 🌈🏰
#summervacay
After getting used to the often solemn, grey, and historically rich feel of British towns and countryside, the vividly colored, Southern European-style village of Portmeirion on the North Wales coast truly stands out as a unique and special place! ✨
This Baroque-inspired architectural cluster was actually built by designer Sir Clough Williams-Ellis over fifty years, between 1925 and 1975. He created it specifically for his Italian wife, who was feeling homesick! Although he denied directly copying Italian villages, he never denied his deep love for Italian architectural art. He ingeniously integrated and repurposed some of the existing local buildings, using a patchwork style to deliberately create a fairytale-like sense of nostalgia. This approach is now considered by many to have profoundly influenced 20th-century postmodern architecture. Today, this estate is a protected building, managed by a trust.
