Review of My Trip to Kamikochi in May 2025 – A Day in the Majestic Mountains
This past May, I had the opportunity to visit Kamikochi, one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural destinations. It was a one-day trip from Tokyo by bus, filled with unforgettable experiences—from stunning landscapes to a challenging late-night return due to traffic jams.
Journey from Tokyo to Kamikochi
I chose to take an overnight bus from Tokyo, a popular option that saves both time and money. The bus traveled through the night, arriving early in the morning—just in time to witness the sunrise over the Japanese Alps.
After a full day of exploring, I took the bus back to Tokyo. However, due to heavy traffic, I didn’t get back until 11 PM, which made the trip longer than expected. If you're planning a day trip like mine, be prepared for potential delays!
Exploring Kamikochi’s Stunning Nature
Stepping into Kamikochi, I was completely mesmerized by its natural beauty. The Azusa River's crystal-clear waters, lush forests, and the Hida Mountains, still capped with snow, created a picture-perfect landscape.
Here are some highlights of my visit:
🌉 Kappa Bridge – The most famous bridge in Kamikochi, offering breathtaking views of the Alps. A perfect spot for photography.
🏞 Taisho Pond – A serene lake with a mesmerizing emerald-green hue, reflecting the surrounding mountains beautifully.
🚶♂️ Azusa River Trail – A peaceful hiking path through pristine forests. I was lucky enough to spot some wild monkeys along the way!
Things to Keep in Mind When Visiting Kamikochi in May
✔ Comfortable weather, but early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring a light jacket.
✔ No private vehicles are allowed—you can only get there by bus or taxi from Matsumoto.
✔ Bring some snacks, as there are only a few restaurants in the area, and they tend to be pricey.
Final Thoughts
Despite the long journey and traffic delays on the way back, Kamikochi was absolutely worth the effort. If you love nature, enjoy light trekking, and want to immerse yourself in a peaceful environment, Kamikochi should definitely be on your travel list!
