The four stars are not for the facilities, which are just average. What sets this place apart is the effort that Laura and her staff put in to welcoming travellers and encouraging them to mix and talk with each other. Pride of place is the nightly free dinner, often hosted by Laura. It is an excellent chance to meet other travellers. I stayed four nights and every evening there was a different, tasty vegetarian meal. A minimal breakfast is also provided. It is worth paying the extra for an aircon dorm; Yogyakarta is hot and sticky. The hostel is conveniently located in between the two main railway stations, a few minutes walk from either. The bunks are not well set up, lacking curtains, shelf, locker and reading light. But the atmosphere makes up for this.
