There’s no doubt that this is by and large a popular and well-reviewed hotel (see other reviews) but it seems that one or more rooms are not up to scratch. Alas, we had one of these (room 2) where there was a strong fruity smell of sewers in the bathroom that brought back heady memories of backpacking around the corners of the globe thirty odd years ago. The room had a small window with bars on it which again, like Proust’s Madeline’s, prompted powerful memories of times past, which sadly are not for public airing. Still, it’s pretty cheap I thought as I lay on the admittedly comfortable bed. My reverie was broken by the neighbour from the next room peeking in through the bars as I had opened the window enough to help with the odours emanating from the bathroom. Luckily I had read my booking wrong and turned up one night late into our two night stay but I was glad to get away. So, yes, this seems a fine place to stay from the testimonies of fellow reviewers. But dig deep and you’ll read a few more reviews along these lines, presumably from guests unlucky enough to also be given the keys to the dreaded number two, which perhaps appropriately smells so startlingly like the number allotted to it.
