Dating back hundreds of years, Oliver Cromwell is rumoured to have stayed in the 17th century. The Old Black Lion was voted 'The Best Pub in Powys' and was in the Top 8 for Wales with the 'National Pub & Bar Awards' in 2023. Our award winning 2 AA Rosette restaurant also won the prestigious Good Food Award Gold Seal for 2024. We recommend booking a meal with us via the messaging service so you can enjoy our great food and service before retiring to your room. There is also an option to order a delicious, freshly cooked breakfast using locally sourced produce on arrival or via a message beforehand for just £10pp. Each room is traditional in style, with a carpeted floor and en suite bathroom. My husband and I visited the old black lion several times during our week in Hay on Wye. This lovely, charming pub is so full of character and it serves delicious high quality food, local beers and ales. Every member of staff we spoke to were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. We look forward to visiting again next time we are in Hay.

Hay-on-Wye is a beautiful location to stay with friends and family. The town is full of independent shops and lovely pubs and restaurants. The mountains that surround the town offer excellent walking and off-road biking. If this sounds like you're thing, the Old Black Lion is the perfect place to stay. Friendly and professional staff, great location, with comfortable rooms and great food, beer and wine, helping you relax after your day in the hills.

This was the perfect place for a couple of nights with friends from which to explore the Black Mountains. Really enjoyed the food and drink and James and his whole team provided first rate friendly service. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back.

Hay-on Wye is a great location for a relaxing weekend. I went with friends to e-bike and we stayed here for 2 nights. The food is excellent, much better quality than traditional “pub grub”. The service of the staff was professional but also very friendly and the rooms are very comfortable. Butty Bach (local beer) is also a cracking pint! Overall we had a fantastic weekend

An excellent dinner in this gem of a place in Hay. Food was delicious, there was superb jazz music, staff were friendly and we really enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately though the trout main course was not available which means we will have to make a return trip!

Wonderful team and the food is first class Great service and everyone was so friendly, really welcoming and everything is exceptionally clean. Will definitely be back. Strongly recommend the Black Lion Ale

Stayed for 1 night but the staff couldn't be more attentive. They fit us in for sunday roast, happy to help where they could and were all just so down to earth and welcoming. A stones throw from the border and short walk from the town square. Great Pub feel and supports local breweries. Really great place!

Very comfy room situated conveniently opposite the main building. Very friendly staff and breakfast very good...poached eggs excellent. Situated in a pleasant small town with market on a thursday. Recommend this very clean and classy place

What a lovely place ❤️ From the friendly, kind, sympathetic reception (horrendous journey up from Truro! ) to the FANTASTIC FOOD (Arancini balls to die for ❤️) to the wonderful jazz night, if your a jazz fan the relaxed a**osphere, and friendliness of the band with the diners was fab! Will be back at some point in the future.
