John Rutledge House Inn

I selected this Historic Inn for our 30th anniversary because of all the good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. The Inn is charming and staff exudes true southern hospitality. The breakfast was delicious and the location was great. Easy walking distance to everything in safe and quiet neighborhood. I look forward to staying at John Rutledge House again!! Thank you staff for a great and memorable Anniversary.

The Rutledge House is a must-do experience in Charleston. From the gorgeous room to afternoon tea and breakfast on the piazza it was a perfect way to welcome the New Year. The staff is overly helpful and all of Charleston is steps away.

This is our second time here. My husband and I love this place. We had a carriage room in the Cooper building. The bed was very comfortable and the room was extremely clean, and so was the property. We had breakfast in our room that was brought to us. The staff was helpful and nice. If I could live here, I would. Yes, it's pricey, but it's WORTH IT. Parking is behind the Inn for $18 a day. The parking can be a little tricky to find right off King Street.

Situated perfectly to explore historic Charleston, The Rutledge House Inn was a delight as the base of our week's stay. Built in the 18th century, the house boasts a beautiful ballroom as well as spacious guest accommodations. The staff is friendly and efficient, and helpful at every turn. A daily breakfast is included, with a choice of eating on the terrace, in the ballroom or asking for room service. Our room was cleaned each day with turn down service in the evening as well. You won't be disappointed!

The John Rutledge House was so perfect. We loved the decor, the accommodations, and the food for breakfast every morning was wonderful! The staff were so friendly and helpful. We truly are grateful for all they did to help us feel right at home. John and Jim were the concierge most days and they were excellent. We hope to stay there again some day!

Just wrapped up 5 night stay and loved it. I was in a deluxe room on 3rd floor. Spacious. Great light. Everything worked. Clean. Comfortable. Quiet. Hard to think of anything I ever needed or wanted during my stay that wasn’t provided or couldn’t have been upon request. A lovely room where I often wanted to just hang out and enjoy the space. I loved the option of enjoying my breakfast there each morning before heading out on my day. Speaking of breakfast, loved that I could have something different each day with many options to choose from depending my mood. A different Special of the day or something customized. Healthier options too. This can sometimes be a challenge in a bnb. Staff were all welcoming, accommodating, and very friendly. Special shout out to John, concierge extraordinaire! He is friendly, a great conversationalist, very knowledgeable about the city, and has the unique ability to make everyone feel like the most special guest in residence. Enjoyed returning after my days adventure and sharing the details with him while enjoying my nightly port. Staff go out of their way to get to know their guests and anticipate their needs. Location is ideal as a home base for exploring this wonderful city. I was sad to leave. Yes there are stairs but I suspect given the time when this house was built, stairs were a definite luxury and practical feature. Imagine flooding and the effects of horses if the entrance was on the ground floor? If stairs are a challenge for you, no ramps or elevators. I was offered assistance with luggage on check in but I suspect in general you need to be able to handle stairs if you stay here. I thoroughly loved my stay and while it was definitely pricier than some other area options, I feel it afforded me the personalized level of attention, comforts, and Charleston experience that I wanted for this trip. The house takes you back In time and it feels special to stay here. Part of experiencing Charleston and being in the historic district. One thing, I do think the photos on Trip Advisor might be a bit dated, if not somewhat staged, and may set the expectation for a more lavish experience than exists today. Not that the experience wasn’t top notch, but better to go in with a sense of reality. I believe the inn was full for the weekend, but it never felt as vibrant or social as the pictures might suggest. Maybe the fact that it never felt “busy” is also a testament to the spaciousness but if you are looking for a more social lodging experience that is conducive to meeting other travelers, not sure if this is it. I suspect most guests hang out in their rooms. I think they have converted the back of the drawing room (they call it the ballroom) behind the pocket doors into another guest room, and while the ballroom is still large it seemed more like a place someone goes to read. The port/brandy service is currently offered by reception in the main entrance, there is no place to congregate, so guests generall

We stayed in room #10 which was lovely and spacious. Bathroom was a good size with a large shower. All the staff were very helpful. There were many choices for breakfast aside from the special of the day. They had a great system for ordering breakfast the night before which worked well for us because we’re early risers. The building was charming with appropriate decor. The afternoon tea was wonderful with a choice of savory and sweet. We’re very happy that we chose John Rutledge House for our stay in Charleston.

We stayed in the Rutledge house for one week in March. My wife reports that it was the best Hotel experience that she has ever had. The John Rutledge House Inn is in the center of the Historical District of Charleston. The Inn has a parking lot at the rear. We never moved the car once we were there. We were able to walk everywhere. We stayed in the Carriage House at the rear of the property. (We travel with a Australian Shepard) The accommodations exceeded our expectations. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The daily breakfast was gourmet and a real treat. My wife enjoyed the afternoon Tea at 4:00 PM. Our room was cleaned daily along with the delivery of fresh towels. The Inn Keeper was Nicki Johnson. We met her on our first day when she delivered our breakfast. She worked hard to insure our stay was perfect. I watched her go to a vacant room carrying a small duffle bag. I asked her where was she off to and she told me that once a vacant room was cleaned she did an inspection to insure that it was done right. You don’t see that very often. We could not be more pleased and will return next year!

From the fabulous breakfast in the morning to the afternoon tea with sweet and savory treats, to the brandy, port, etc. in the evening, your stay here will be memorable. A great location in Old Town Charleston within a short walk to several fine restaurants and other places of interest. It is the kind of inn experience that makes you want to go back again and again.
