Our experience was mixed and overall improved after we asked for a room change. We stayed four nights. Although I booked an upgraded room with a king bed, we were put into a standard room with a queen bed. What's worse is that room 18016 (18th floor, room 16) was right next to a slamming door AND a service room where staff cleaned up after the lounge closed at 1:00 am on some nights and 2:00 am on other night. There was way too much noise, from 1:00–3:00 am. Just as an aside, the walls, carpet, and ceiling around the 18th floor lounge was also painted black, which made it feel like we were staying in an industrial basement. It was depressing.
After two nights of this, we went to the front desk and the staff was exceptionally helpful and kind. They moved us to the 16th floor and into a room that matched the description of what I had reserved (upgraded with a king bed). We were also at the end of a brightly-lit, lightly painted hallway, so it was bright and cheery and QUIET!
We also paid for breakfast. This experience started out somewhat bad and ended positively. The hotel is really popular for people on weekend getaways, so the breakfast area was literally overrun with hoards of people. Once Monday and Tuesday came along, the breakfast area was much more pleasant.
If you're visiting Berlin, I recommend a mid-week stay to avoid the weekend crowds at the hotel. Museums are also closed on Mondays, so a mid-week visit is better.
