As part of the Dance of Gesture exhibition, Houston-based Colombian artist Loriana Espinel will host a conversation and live demonstration. In her exhibition, Loriana Espinel draws inspiration from pre-Columbian pictographs from Chiribiquete National Park in Colombia, as well as Japanese and European calligraphic styles to develop a new visual system. Dance of Gesture Exhibition runs through Saturday, August 31 at Sabine Street Studios' East Corridor Gallery. The Conversation and Demonstration event is free and open to the public and will take place on Thursday, August 29th at 6:30 pm at Sabine Street Studios, located at 1907 Sabine Street, Houston, TX 77007.August 29th from 6:30 pm: Artist TalkLive Painting PerformanceRaffle for the live paintingMultimedia performanceAbout the Artist: Loriana Espinel, a Colombian artist who has lived in Houston for two decades, began her artistic journey with a degree in Visual Arts from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá. While completing her major, she spent a decade with Teatro de los Sentidos, a Colombian theater group that explores the poetics of feelings and participation. After moving to the USA, Loriana faced the realities of life and work. She spent her first five years in NYC but eventually found a slower pace of life in Houston and the opportunity to be an artist again. She also volunteered with Absolute Art Productions, a group focused on Latino theater and filmmaking. She took on various roles in their productions while pursuing her art through photography and painting. Loriana's work has been showcased in exhibitions across the US and Colombia. Her photographs have appeared in magazines and books, while her illustrations have adorned poetry collections. She sometimes focuses on one medium or merges them as a photographer and painter. Her art often incorporates words, text, portraits, and nature themes, transcending the limitations of a single medium or concept. While creating smaller pieces might be more practical, she feels an undeniable urge to create large-scale works.
