This extraordinary exhibit, held at the renowned John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., showcases the powerful voices that bravely stood against apartheid in South Africa. Running from October 22 to October 23, 2023, this enlightening exhibition profiles American citizens and organizations who valiantly challenged South Africa's apartheid regime, even in the face of resistance from their own government.

Within the magnificent Hall of Nations, you will find informative text panels and engaging videos that delve into the ways in which U.S. citizens and civil society played a crucial role in dismantling apartheid. These voices came from all walks of life and from every corner of America, transcending divisions of race, age, wealth, and political affiliation. They took their fight to the streets, college campuses, corporate boardrooms, and even the South African Embassy. By resoundingly saying "NO" to apartheid, they also condemned their own government's anti-democratic policies and vehemently opposed the use of force by the South African military and police state.

Moreover, this exhibition pays homage to the early American social justice pioneers of the late 1800s and early 1900s, who laid the foundation for the anti-apartheid activism of the 1980s and 90s. It also explores the connections between global anti-apartheid movements and contemporary social justice movements in the U.S., South Africa, and across the African Diaspora. Through an examination of past lessons, tactics, and strategies, today's 21st-century activists can be informed, inspired, and united.

The America's Voices Against Apartheid Exhibit is presented in collaboration with the Kennedy Center and the Howard University Republic of South Africa Project (HURSAP)/Sister States of Maryland, Inc. This thought-provoking exhibit, themed "Confronting Injustice at Home and Abroad," was originally showcased at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa in May 2023. It is a unique opportunity to witness the profound impact that American citizens and organizations had in shaping a new, free, and democratic South Africa while strengthening democracy at home.
