James in Shanghai

One of Yangzhou’s coolest streets

Certain parts of Yangzhou can have a feeling of a less developed and more honest version of Suzhou. Pishi street is a great example of this less gentrified version of Suzhou. The street is buzzing with bookshops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Most of which are very recent additions and you can see lots of building as more establishments join the street. There are some fantastic book shops where you can buy interesting Chinese books and buy cute souvenirs of the street. There are also many restaurants which are reasonably priced and there is not a chain in sight. The street itself is busy as cars and e-bikes are still allowed to drive down the street. Take care when walking and taking photos of cute shop fronts. The street itself takes around an hour to explore properly on both sides. Pishi street translates to leather market street indicating what the street once was. There are lots of interesting streets and alleys like this to explore in Yangzhou. Yangzhou has lots of history and with the addition of the new fast train line direct to Shanghai I can’t help feeling Yangzhou will look very different in 20 year’s time as tourism continues to develop.
