Popped in for afternoon drinks on bank holiday weekend. Not many guests in garden and several (young) staff members either walking around with heads down or chatting with one another at the bar. After waiting 10 minutes and seeing staff members disappear inside, my husband went up to the bar to order some drinks to be told that he could not order them there, they had to be ordered via a staff member. It’s not as if drinks were being brought out from the hotel, they were being dispensed from this bar. My husband returned to our table and waited, and waited-eventually, he managed to cost the staff member and we finally placed an order, which took another 10 minutes to be delivered. When a slightly older staff member walked past, my husband passed on his comments about how the other staff members were not looking up or checking whether people needed drinks, she merely laughed. A while later, an older man in a white shirt and black trousers came out into the garden and came over to us, and commented that he had heard we were not happy with the service. My husband reiterated his comments about the staff not looking around and he said they were looking down because it was sunny !!! I’ve no idea how the whole of sunny Europe functions, if that’s the case and what a ridiculous thing to say! He said the staff were overwhelmed with the number of orders-there were barely 20 people in the garden and at least 4 staff members, not including the guy behind the bar, who was just there looking around . Heaven knows how they would cope if it was busy ! He also said that if we were not happy with the service, there were plenty of other pubs in Yarmouth! Again, a ridiculous comment to make. No apology for the amount of time we had waited. We have been to the George many many times over the years and enjoyed a fabulous afternoon in the garden – I can only assume this is new management and they are doing a very poor job, in my opinion. What a pity… (We subsequently bumped into a friend a little later who had gone into the George garden just before us but had left after waiting for ages, without being served).
