Hickory Shades Motel

Very impressed with this location. For the price of the rooms, you honestly can’t beat it. As soon as I walked into the room and smelt how clean it was, I knew this was a nice place to stay. Clean room, very clean bathroom, and all the basic amenities you would need. Bed was comfortable as well. Only two minor things I could say that weren’t excellent. The bathroom was on the small side, but I’m 6’2” 215lbs and had no problem with it. The other thing was our room was right next to the road so we heard traffic going by all night long. But that’s not really within the control of the property owners so I didn’t dock any stars for that. If you’re in the area and need a nice, clean, cheap place to stay, this is your spot! A++!!

We were a little put off by the older bad reviews, but were encouraged by the newer better reviews and decided the price was good so we would try it. Our room was clean and comfortable. Yes, the bathroom is really small, but it's doable, even for bigger people. This was a working vacation for me and the WIFI was just fine. I did notice a Wifi extender, so maybe that was why. The Dish TV was a little wonky on the first night we were there, but we had no issues after that. And yes, thankfully, there was a fly swatter. It's in the Big Woods. Do you think there are no flies coming in when you're packing your stuff in? There is a fridge (turn it down when you get there or you'll be having frozen half & half), a microwave and a coffee maker. What more do you need? A hair dryer?? Check on that, too. The drive down to the West gate of the State Park is about 8 minutes. I LOVE the locks on the door. No key, just a code. Works perfectly every time. Nothing that "deactivates" in your wallet next to your credit cards. It's a little noisy since you're on right on 46 and there is traffic there any time, but I didn't really notice that too much. The worst thing I could say about it is about the pillows, but that's a personal preference and for 3 nights I could even live with that. If you don't need anything really fancy, give it a try.
