We had an such a wonderful stay at the awesome Nihi property. Starting with the handling of the checkin procedure in Bali to welcoming us in Sumba made the journey really delightful. We were well taken care off as bad weather led to flight cancellations when leaving Sumba. Fresh coconuts were waiting in the car and after a 90mins drive, we were warmly welcomed by the Nihi team. Our villa was spectacular, the location stunning and the warmth and friendliness of all staff was super great. My wife has some food intolerances and the chef and staff took super care to work around those, this must be applauded as it made a big positive difference for my wife. Spa safari is a must and we were truly glad we hiked there, it made the relaxation so much more enjoyable afterwards! The canoe excursion with Tami was tranquil (Still wondering Tami, how you managed to get soaked ) and we were greeted friendly everywhere by locals in and next to the river. The guest captains Marthen, Dida and Valentin worked tirelessly in the background to make our stay as bliss as possible. And still, despite all the pampering, there was a tad of wildness still felt, the horses running at the beach, the informal mingling at the happiest hour and to witness the release of freshly hatched sea turtles was the proverbial icing on the cake. We hope to be back.

Nihi has the best service and hospitality I’ve ever experienced. They truly go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. They made us feel so special for our honeymoon with all the details they provided. They decorated our room, sat us in a table decorated with flowers for dinner, and upgraded us to the best spa room. It felt like they were celebrating with us. Maxy and Vera, our coaches during our stay, took care of all our needs and made our stay so stress free. Perfect location for a honeymoon and definitely worth the trip from Los Angeles.

One of the best trips I've had so far, the beach was just amazing unlike any other beach in the world. Took us only 1 hour flight from bali yet we arrived on a very different island unlike bali here at sumba. Horses are so cute and just made the trip perfect. Foods are nice and the rooms as well. The team that handled us Petrus, doris and Dinda are the MVP super friendly and literally available 24/7

It was magnificent! The location, the staff, food and accommodation are 7 star! Your every wish is anticipated before you even knew you wanted it. The surf is the best in the world and the yoga with the lovely Emilie is outstanding. You truly are at the edge of wilderness and that’s what makes it so special!

Nihi is not a resort – it’s a state of mind. The luxury of privacy, harmony, nature, and exceptional quality, infused with the warmth and professionalism of the wonderful staff, is something words cannot truly capture, nor can any photo do it justice. For those who ride horses and love pristine, exotic beaches, it is a true paradise. The rating scale simply isn’t enough to reflect our experience. Although we travel a lot, we can honestly say – Nihi isn’t just another level, it’s an entirely different dimension. Special greetings to Anier, Doris, and Nina. We’ll definitely be back!

I have always struggled to trust horses since a traumatic experience as a child, which left me scarred. That fear stayed with me for years — a shadow that kept me admiring horses from afar but never feeling truly comfortable around them. So, when I arrived at NIHI for the Equine Intuitive Retreat, I wasn’t sure what to expect — only that it would take a leap of faith to face my fears Meeting Carol changed everything. She is truly one of a kind — her ability to connect with the horses felt almost magical, completely in tune with NIHI’s peaceful surroundings. In our first session, I found myself in tears — not from fear, but from an overwhelming sense of release. Carol introduced me to Marley, a horse chosen specifically for me, and over the next four days, I slowly learned to let go of my anxiety and rebuild my trust. What also struck me was NIHI’s incredible approach to their horses, guided by stable manager Evelien. Her philosophy of allowing the horses to be free spirits — rather than controlling them — was unlike anything I had ever seen. It created this sense of harmony and calm that allowed me to connect with Marley in a way I never thought possible. As a female pilot in the UAE, I’m used to working in a fast-paced, male-dominated environment where I must project confidence and control. At NIHI, I had to embrace vulnerability — to trust Carol and Marley, to let them guide me — and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I left feeling stronger, calmer, and with a newfound respect for the incredible bond between humans and horses.

From the second we arrived, we were blown away. The service is unreal—you get your own dedicated experience people (shout out to Asna & Lian) who somehow anticipate everything before you even think to ask? They pack and unpack you!!! People even take your stuff through airport security. The surf? Jetskis to paddle you and people to wax your board. Jason to catch you in that barrel. They just made everything feel effortless. The experiences and activities are endless. I kept trying to pre-plan village and authentic experiences, but they had it all covered... Teaching English, playing sports with local kids, and cooking classes for real Sumbanese food (shout out to Angela). The best sunsets, free mini massages, horse races, horses free roaming, turtle hatching, everything. And the food? Every meal was incredible. We’re talking freshly caught fish, wood-fired pizzas, the best sambal I’ve ever had, and somehow every dinner managed to top the one before. They even remembered how I liked my coffee or chocolates. And they were so good with ALL our dietary restrictions, including a no-seed-oil diet. The surfing—this was the highlight for us. The jet skis made our sessions like 2 hr+. My husband is a total beginner, and I was a bit nervous, but the instructor—Monty—was incredible, getting him on insane waves even with it being such a fast, advanced wave. Monty always knew where to put us, and we never got caught. They got him out on the infamous Occys left every single day. And meeeee—absolutely stoked. TY to Jemma and Richard as well. Beyond the resort, we made time to visit some local villages, and I’d really recommend bringing stuff to donate—clothes, school supplies, anything. It was honestly one of the most memorable and grounding parts of the trip. Sumba is beautiful in this untouched, raw way. Outside of the resort, there are no tourists, no Instagram—just real life and insanely kind people and stories and culture. Also, Nihi isn’t just sitting pretty—it’s doing a ton of meaningful humanitarian work. You can tell they’re deeply involved in the community and not just checking a box. It made staying there feel even more special. This will definitely be our new spot.

We had a truly unforgettable stay at NIHI Sumba, celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, and we were thrilled to share the experience with our three kids. It was a special trip for all of us—our children said it was one of the best vacations they’ve ever had! From the seamless check-in process in Bali to the warm and personal welcome upon our arrival in Sumba, every detail of the journey was thoughtfully orchestrated and deeply enjoyable. To our delight, we were upgraded to the beautiful Villa Putri Wamoro, a spacious and spectacular retreat overlooking the ocean—thank you, NIHI, for this generous gesture. The villa’s setting and comfort exceeded all expectations. We’re especially grateful to our guest captains, Lauru and Doris, who went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. Their attentiveness and genuine care made a lasting impression on our entire family. One of the highlight of our trip was our first-ever surf lesson with the wonderful Jemma. She was incredibly patient and encouraging, turning what could have been a clumsy first attempt into a truly fun and empowering experience. The kindness and attentiveness of every staff member truly elevated our entire stay. We truly hope to return one day—it was an experience we’ll always treasure.

Sumba joins Maldives and Japan, as a destination to which we will most definitely wish to keep coming back. The Nihi beach is arguably the most amazing we’ve ever seen, the food was top quality and seeing the horses run every morning never gets old. The hotel feels very private and the “Edge of Wildness” slogan really feels fitting here. We highly recommend this place to virtually any sort of traveller. Our only concern is that it’s difficult to avoid Bali altogether when planning a trip here, but we remain hopeful for more flight connections which would allow us to skip that hellhole next time :)

NIHI Sumba is unlike anywhere we’ve ever stayed. Described as the “edge of the wildness,” it truly delivers on that promise. Sumba Island is a hidden gem that every nature lover should experience, and staying at NIHI made our time there extraordinary. From the untouched beaches to the thrilling surf, the graceful horses, the beautifully designed villas, and the incredible food, everything was beyond perfect. The staff’s warmth and genuine care made us feel more like family than guests. It’s a rare kind of luxury—effortless and unpretentious, where comfort and sophistication coexist seamlessly. The experiences we had were straight out of a dream: riding horses through the waves, marveling at children bathing their buffaloes in the beach, indulging in the spa safari, and witnessing horses galloping freely along the shoreline. Each moment felt like it belonged in a storybook. As an ex-teacher, I was deeply moved by NIHI’s partnership with the Sumba Foundation. Visiting the children’s English class, reading with them, and learning about the foundation’s work left a lasting impression. It’s rare to find a resort that not only offers luxury but also contributes meaningfully to the local community and environment. NIHI Sumba gave us memories we’ll cherish forever, and there’s no doubt in our minds we’ll be back to relive them. This isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.

To sum up Nihi Sumba in one word would have to be WOW. Where do i start. Everything about this resort is absolutely amazing, from the rooms, food & beverage and the staff. I had very high expectations for this place and I’m happy to say those expectations were exceeded. All the food and non alcoholic drinks are included in the room rate, and everything was A1. So many cool and unique experiences are on offer ranging from a half day spa safari, swimming with local horses or surfing the world famous ‘gods left’. But the highlight of our stay would have to be how nice the staff were. At all levels from the GM to the Chefs to the gardeners. Everyone meets you with a huge smile and a welcome. Will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have stayed here with my family, memories that I will cherish for life.
