Brown Bread Bakery Guest House

Stayed here at LP’s recommendation. My single room with shared bathroom on the first floor was fine, it just got a bit loud at times when all the dogs in Bengalitola would start barking. Otherwise, a very nice guesthouse. You can meet lots of interesting people at the cafe downstairs.

I lived in Kolkata for over two years so I’m not being an overly prissy tourist . The staff here try their best and Varanasi is a challenging city at times . We had room number 1 with an en-suite bathroom. Noisy beyond belief - and one window only has half a curtain so the street light pours in. Two towels and you’ve got to ask for a new one - as once used it would never dry in the room. The en-suite bathroom neighbours the restaurant toilet so every noise echoes in your room. It also seems to be the preferred bathroom for staff to clear their throats of phlegm and shower at all times of the night. To be honest the bathrooms could do with a good scrub with bleach . The steps up to the room are very steep and narrow and with carrying luggage not the easiest place to negotiate. At night the doors are chained and padlocked when we tried to get out at 6am for a walk we couldn’t- not sure what would happen in an emergency. With some love and attention this place could be a great no frills option but the noise from the restaurant and outside don’t make it a relaxing place to stay . The location is the main reason for booking.

Nice cakes (ricotta cheesecake was excellent) , decent bread, long menu a bit like the Mona Lisa cafe opposite. The pasta with garlic and chilli was pretty good. Popular place to hang out. There’s a roof top top of you can climb the stairs but I liked it downstairs.

We took the half day tour with Umar. We had a wonderful experience. We walked the city, ghats. We take a boat tour. We had the chance to visit the school and see their program. He explained us very clearly with enthusiasm. Thanks Umar ! We recommend this tour.

We have eaten at brown bread and have also done their morning boat tour. Both have been fabulous! The food is delicious with lots of vegan options and friendly staff. We did the walking tour with, Umar, who is really energetic and kind. He had good English and lots of knowledge to share. We would definitely recommend visiting Brown bread bakery to others.

Great rooms, great food, great rooftop with view on the Ganga, and most of all, staff extremely convenient and nice. Chandu the ***ager of the hotel is always ready to help, thank you for everything !
