Generally a happy and friendly place, with many good activities you can join. Amazing smoothies and drinks and coffee and breakfasts. The traditional dinner brought in by a local family served on banana leaves was excellent- the community cooking dinners at the hostel were also great. the toddy wine lunch was mediocre - they weren’t set up for a big group and didn’t have much for vegetarians. the fish lunch at the local restaurant was great- the boat ride by the “island” (mangroves) is too far away and boring bc you just sit there for a long time, after you’ve been sitting in the car for a long time. Loud music plays until late late late at night even though a sign says it stops at 11:30. Overall it’s good - great staff, great AC, great food.

I had a brilliant stay here and made some amazing friends. Although I have been to a lot of places with family, it was my first time solo travelling in the south of India. Varkala is beautiful, and the friends I made here made my stay wholesome. I was working on most days during the day, but we would usually go out for evening walks and dinners at the cliff, which iis located at just a 2 minute walk from the hostel. Atif was a fun host, and the hostel truly had a global backpacker vibe. It was full almost the entire time I was there. Lovely time!
