Not much to expect here, honestly — this is a very old hotel, and it shows. I stayed at Marco Polo Hotel mainly for its location, which is probably the best thing about it. It’s right in the middle of Tawau town, so you can easily walk to restaurants, shops, and the market.
The rooms are quite spacious, but they seriously need an upgrade. Furniture is old, the carpets look tired, and some of the fixtures in the bathroom don’t work properly. You can tell not much has changed in the last couple of decades.
Cleanliness is hit or miss — some areas feel okay, others not so much. I noticed some dust and mold in corners, and a few reviews I saw mentioned cockroaches (thankfully I didn’t see any during my stay, but still… not very comforting).
Staff were friendly and helpful though — probably the only saving grace. They were polite and tried their best to accommodate requests.
Wi-Fi was weak, TV didn’t have many channels, and overall amenities are outdated. If you’re just looking for a place to sleep and don’t mind the old-school vibe, it might be fine. But if you’re expecting comfort or modern standards, this isn’t it.
Would I stay again? Only if I had no other option nearby.
