The Whitehouse Inn

Like everyone else, we came to Sutherland to see the SAAO telescopes. The town is only a few blocks in each direction, and you will be able to see the Church, the gift shop and Planetarium all within a couple of hours, so one night here is sufficient, with the main focus being the night sky. The Whitehouse Inn is well run, clean and very friendly. The bar gives you a chance to meet local people in the evening, and the restaurant is one of the better choices in town. The funishings are most definately "mid-century", but the rooms are spacious and the DSTV has lots of channels. We staying in the two bedroom apartment over the bar accessible by outside stairs.The building has a long history, and has been modified to function in its current incarnation as a hotel, so the shortcomings are part of the charm, in my opinion. The full breakfast was included, so overall a very good value for money.

Great care has been taken to ensure that the room provided everything a guest could want. The towels had seen better days and were old and tired looking however the room was comfortable. Breakfast was not that great. We sat down at a table and we were asked to move as that table had been booked with no reservation sign! Who makes bookings for breakfast? The waiter needs some confidence and must learn to speak up and smile. That was a bit uncomfortable.

Stayed in a outside room. Very well appointed for Sutherland. Kitchen. Great hot water. Comfy beds. Ian and his staff were so helpful to two older gents. Food and service was festive and good. Liked the big bar area. Great parking. Central for our Star Gazing.

This was my first visit to Sutherland, our hosts was great, warm and friendly, we felt right at home the moment we checked in. The room was great with everything that you might need. We dined in on both nights because the food was just to good! their burgers are the bomb!!

Ian has really set up an amazing place. Rooms are comfortable and equipped for the cold in Sutherland. The place is welcoming with friendly staff. Dinner was supurb with well prepared meals of lamb curry and karoo lamb chops. The pup is a place where you can meet other visitors and enjoy a dram.
