We have been going to Gilpin Lodge since 2010 and it is our favourite hotel for the the accommodation, ambiance and delicious food. However, this time our stay at the Gilpin Lodge has been quite disappointing mainly due to the inadequate dining experience. While we were very happy with our room which was warm and spacious (and opens into the garden although it was upstairs) the food left much to be desired and significatly impacted our overall enjoyment. I so looked forward to the breakfast as on previous occasions I had the best ever vegetarian breakfast with their vegetable potatoes cake for many years! (I am not a vegetarian, I just love the Gilpin vegetarian breakfast). This time the breakfast was so disappointing , both the vegetarian and non vegetarian sausages were so hard you could practically knock someone with them! For dinner we had the tasting menu on the first night. Although this is a Michelin starred restaurant the chef did not produce Michelin star quality food, one dish featured a slither of turbot served on a bed of unseasoned hard bartolini beans which did not complement the fish at all. On the second night we went for the Origin menu which consist of the usual starter main & dessert from the same tasting menu but without the precourses. As this is more like ala-carte menu I expected a normal portions one usually get, this is not so, the portions were so small the same as the tasting menu. It seeemed the chef got 3 portions of main course from one single duck breast leaving us with a couple of mouthful for the main dish and the skin was not rendered probably and not edible. No side dishes were offered making the meal incomplete and unsatisfying. Desserts were similaly disappointing , lacking creativity & excitement. I woke up hungry about 2AM and ate all the shortbreads in the room! While the staffs remain friendly and helpful they are rather chaotic and we needed to request 4 times to bring an extra portion of bread during dinner. The main dining room was pleasant but without the white crisp tableclothes and fresh flowers the dining area feels more like a casual cafe rather then the fine dining establishment it once was. This combined with the lackluster meals has left us feeling disheartened and sadly the prospect of returning no longer excites us. Overall, despite being happy with the room and helpful friendly staffs the dining experience fell far short, and given the price we paid we expected much more specially for the Source Origin menu.
