My recent stay at the Sofitel Hongqiao Shanghai fell short of expectations for a five-star hotel. While the property has potential, several aspects significantly impacted the experience.
Dining - The breakfast and lunch buffets were very underwhelming, with limited options—particularly for those expecting a Western or French cuisine as advertised. The offerings leaned heavily toward Chinese cuisine, including dishes like mainly crayfish, which may not appeal to all international guests.
Service - Unfortunately service did not meet the standards of a luxury hotel. Almost all staff besides managers don’t speak any English so communication is very difficult. Staff generally across departments like reception, concierge, security, fitness centre and restaurants all seemed disengaged, unmotivated and lethargic. While the management did apologise and offer a discount and concession on our second night after we raised concerns with our room and service, the overall atmosphere lacked the warmth and attentiveness expected at this level.
Overall - Having stayed at other five-star hotels, including the Intercontinental which is nearby, the difference in service, quality and attention to detail is huge. The Sofitel Hongqiao has the foundation to be a great hotel, but improvements in management, staff training, and guest experience are needed to truly justify its “five-star” rating, currently it’s probably four stars in my opinion. I hope the hotel takes this feedback constructively, as with the right adjustments, it could deliver the premium experience guests expect.
