My husband and I spent a week at this exquisitely appointed eco-lodge for our first trip to Belize. We are SO happy with every element of the experience, including the decision to have a driver pick us up from the airport in Belize City and bring us to the lodge (instead of renting a car). The excursions from the lodge with knowledgeable guides and expert drivers are really worth it. We LOVED the ATM cave tour, Barton Creek cave canoeing, Xunantunich Mayan ruins, and Caracol Mayan ruins with stops at the very cool Rio Frio cave, Rio on Pools, and a swim at Big Rock falls. Our driver and guide for most of our excursions was Amin, who is the perfect blend of super knowledgeable (!), dependable, and easy going. We love that he shared personal experiences from his Mayan culture. The lodge is situated in a jungle paradise with a hiking trail around the perimeter, a yoga deck, a bird watching tower (download the Merlin app and identify birds by sound!!!), a spa and sauna, a pool with a cascading fountain (perfect for relaxing), and games to enjoy in an open air/thatched roof space (ping pong, foosball, board games, etc.). There is a limited number of rooms which allows for a personalized experience. Our room had spectacular jungle scenes painted by a local artist on the walls around the bed, and wonderful wood carvings on the doors and furniture (also by a local woodworker). There was a kitchenette but we didn’t use it much as Chef Norma prepared fantastic customized meals that wowed us each day. It was fine without a car as we did an excursion every other day and relaxed on the “off” days. On one “day off” I took a shuttle to San Ignacio (just $10 U.S.), toured the Green Iguana Conservation Project (located in the San Ignacio hotel) and visited the AJAW chocolate factory, then took the local 1:15p bus from San Ignacio to San Antonio & paid the driver a bit more to take us to the mile or so farther to the Mariposa lodge (you could easily walk from San Antonio, or get a taxi from San Ignacio instead of the bus … or do the guided San Ignacio tour - point here is that there are options to explore beyond the lodge if you don’t have a car). We HIGHLY recommend this jewel of a place; the staff is top notch, the ambience inspires and relaxes, and the locale offers the best of inland Belize’s culture, natural beauty, and outdoor adventures.
