Hôtel Mercure Saint-Lô Centre

This was a nice overnight stay during a bus tour group through Normandy. The room was very clean and the staff was friendly. The morning breakfast was nice, and the AC in the room worked well for us. The only caveat, was the internet was down that evening. The hotel had a restaurant and lounge and there were a handful of restaurants to walk to right around the corner of the hotel.

We had a reasonable 2 day stay in this hotel, which despite its name, is not central but a way out of the centre of St. Lo, opposite the rail station. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and the room was comfortable. We had a few problems with the hotel though. Firstly, the restaurant was very disappointing. The staff were very young and clearly inexperienced so the service was earnest but poor. The food was pretty mediocre. Secondly, on both days we were there, kids (friends of the junior restaurant staff no doubt) were allowed to congregate across the steps to the entrance which was a little annoying whenever we were going in and out of the hotel. Not a good look for the hotel which they did nothing about. Thirdly, on our last night, at around 1.30 to 2.00 in the morning, guests or staff started a party outside at the back of the hotel. It didn’t last long but it was an unwelcome disturbance. Finally, we were charged for a breakfast we never took and when we asked to be reimbursed we were told we’d have to wait for the manager to arrive, which because we had a ferry to catch was not possible. Despite their promises we still haven’t been reimbursed.

C'est un peu par hasard que nous avons découvert cet établissement en le choisissant pour étape sur le chemin du retour des vacances. Quelle bonne surprise... L'hôtel est superbement situé face aux fortifications de Saint Lo, les pieds dans les eaux de la Vire. La vue depuis la salle de restaurant est d'ailleurs tout à fait somptueuse. Les chambres sont vastes, confortables et parfaitement insonorisées. La nôtre était qui plus est pourvue d'une baignoire. Mais la palme revient ici à l'équipe. Quel service ! L'accueil à la réception s'est révélé attentionné, prévenant et efficace. Le sympathique duo du restaurant - ayant pourtant fort à faire - s'est efforcé rendre notre dîner agréable. Un petit retard survient dans la livraison des plats : on s'excuse avec le sourire et s'enquiert de votre bien-être... Quant aux plats, ils étaient savoureux et faisaient la part belle aux spécificités de la région. Mille mercis à tout le staff pour l'agréable et trop court séjour que nous avons passé ici. A recommander chaleureusement donc...
