Royal Oak Hotel

The Hotel was well presented and furnished to a good standard. Our room was clean and roomy. The reason for awarding 3 stars was down to a few things that could have been better. The shower was cold, which after a days walking is not ideal. As this was in the morning we had no time to sort this out. The breakfast was ok. The other is the ‘set menu’ which is £35 per head whether you have the 3 courses or not, which seems inflexible as we didn’t have a starter. The Hotel location is fabulous and hopefully these comments will be taken on board.

Stayed here as a couple for three nights and had a fantastic stay The staff were great - Jaison, Ryan, Dave and Rosina all really friendly and nothing was too much trouble Food was excellent, plentiful and very good value for money We stayed in room 23 which overlooked the stream, lovely to listen to the water and birds. Room was comfortable and quiet The hotel has been recently refurbished and everything thing feels clean, fresh and tastefully done Loads of parking Hotel ideally located for hiking in the Borrowdale Valley. We did two hikes from the door - Stonethwaite Fells (5 Wainwright’s) and Borrowdale Fells (3 Wainwright’s) Hotel is mostly a walkers / hikers hotel as it’s one of the coast to coast stops We had packed lunches on two days and these were the best we’ve ever had Overall we love our stay. Would highly recommended and would definitely stay again

From the minute we set foot in the place we knew it would be a good stay. From check-in to check out the service is first class. The inn has a cozy and relaxed feel and every member of the staff went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. We choose to dine there on both nights when booking and we are so glad that we did. The food was simply perfect and the team in the kitchen should be very proud of themselves! I cannot find any fault in the place and we will certainly be back. A lovely added bonus for me was that I found out that the beautiful Rezina was from Crete and as I am learning Greek I was able to practice with her for the weekend. We had high hopes due to previous good reviews, price bracket, and a feature in a broadsheet's travel section. Sadly we were disappointed by the condition of our room (one window was warped and could not be closed, the cupboard door could not be closed and swung open continually, the cistern didn't fill up, the room was cold when we arrived, the bathroom smelled of damp). All of this could be forgiven or set aside but for the manager's response which was 'oh yes we know about that' and no expression of regret. Meal service at both dinner and breakfast was rude and chaotic. On the plus side the food was good, the location is great, it had charm. But we won't be going back.

I’ve loved the Royal Oak for many years, previous owners Susan and Nuala ran a wonderful traditional country hotel offering warmth and comfort with hearty local fare. New ownership has resulted in an upgrade to all facilities, and indeed to the culinary experience. Of course prices are now a little higher, but I still believe this place offers the best value in the Lakes when you compare what you get with what you pay. Also a fabulous location with so much to do from your door, and a great new manager Jason and team.

We walked the Cumbria Way with our two dogs so our feet were tired and we longed for some comfort at the end of the walk. The Royal Oak was a one night stop in the middle of our trip and it was fantastic, we could not have asked for more. Amazing accommodation, lovely food and friendly helpful staff. A brilliant drying room that dried our boots and socks. We were given a beautiful room with lots of space and a really comfy bed. The owner was friendly even though they had experienced flooding in parts of the hotel due to the storms that week, you would never have known, they put all their guests first and remained cheerful. I will definitely go back for a longer stay next time. A memorable part of our week.

Stayed here on coast to coast walk. Service excellent, rooms clean etc. All food was first class including the roast beef Sunday dinner with a great selection of veg all perfectly cooked. Breakfast also very good. Will stay again when on a regular holiday.

As we approached The Royal Oak for our short break in the Lakes our first impression was of a pub rather than a hotel. A step inside didn’t change our perception – two rather dark and dismal lounge areas and a small bar that doubled as reception. To the rear of the hotel are a large number of self-catering terraced cottages that share the amenities of the hotel Although we had good weather, our north facing room to the rear of the hotel was very cold which made things very uncomfortable when retiring to bed and when using the bathroom. There are no televisions in the bedrooms or throughout the hotel. This was disappointing as were looking forward to watching some of the Olympics and we always like to catch up on the news. Housekeeping was very poor; the bed was never made up. The only evidence that someone that had been in the room was clean coffee mugs Breakfast was a disaster. Guests from the cottages descended on the breakfast room like a swarm of locusts. Apart from the fry-ups everything was self-service – toast, tea, coffee etc. It was chaos. The dinner menu each evening provided a choice of just two items, one of which was vegetarian. Not great. The only positive was the staff and I applaud them all. Having to multitask due to serious understaffing. A special thanks to Danielle and Rezina. They went the extra mile under difficult conditions. We won’t be rushing back…

This was our 2nd visit to The Royal Oak Hotel and it didn’t disappoint. Lovely refurbished hotel. We stayed 3 nights for dinner and breakfast. Food was amazing. Full marks to the chefs Dave and Paul. The staff are so pleasant and helpful and make the hotel what it is. Rezina, so pleasant and helpful. Jason couldn’t do enough for you to make your stay memorable. And a special shout out to ‘Brian’ who has such a lovely personality and another helpful and pleasant member of staff.
