Hostal Colonial Potosi

Located on a Main Street, this is one of those hotels that look small from the outside but is huge on the inside. It’s a narrow street and even a taxi must stop traffic while unloading any luggage. The location cannot be beat as it’s just 1 block from the central square. You also have the best restaurant in town directly across the street - “4060”. The hotel and rooms are all equipped with a radiator which keeps it toasty warm. All other aspects of the rooms are fine - linens, shower, toilet, etc. It’s not a 5 star resort so don’t expect all the amenities, but hot water and heat and a nice environment will make you feel “at home”. You simply can’t stay in a better location than this hotel. It is 1min to the main square of the old town. A 4,000m you will appreciate short walks. There’s a beer place across the street with a good selection of non-lager beer but I wouldn’t eat there. It’s in a gorgeous old building and rooms are old styled to match. The bed was very comfortable, the room was nice and warm. Plenty of hot water (shower over bath) and they was a hair dryer that wasn’t attached with an armoured chain to the wall. Breakfast was nice too but simple There was a TV but no remote. An empty fridge that wasn’t plugged in. One bottle of water for a couple over 2 days was stingy. And I don’t know why they didn’t replace the toilet roll. In summary, highly recommended for a short stay (we did 2 nights).

Potosí is Bolivia’s crown jewel, the city that perhaps best encapsulates the textured and often oppressive history of this country. And Hostal Colonial is one of the lesser diadems in that crown, located within 20 meters of the central square and thus as close to the historical sights as the visitor can get. The Colonial is indeed in a sprawling seigneurial residence of the colonial era, and rooms largely face on one or the other of the two interior patios. (My room was apparently an exception, facing out onto the street and angled down to provide a view into the main square.) The breakfast room faces onto the second of the interior patios, both of which feature agreeable fountains. The staff at the front desk, at whatever hour, is friendly and helpful. They spared me a fruitless walk to the purported site in Potosí of Bolivia’s postal system, warning me it had closed; and the desk clerk followed up by calling around for guidance as to whether there was any post office left anywhere in the city, for which it seems there is little demand. (Turns out the Correos de Bolivia has been reduced in Potosí to a single postal agent sitting at a desk in an office for private delivery companies, four blocks tediously uphill from the Hostal Colonial — but the cards I left with that agent were indeed delivered to the United States within 2 weeks, far faster than I would have expected.) As for the hotel guest’s quality of life, the bed was comfortable, the shower was separated from the bathroom’s other necessary facilities by a shower door, and the WiFi signal was strong and unwavering. The Colonial provides a solid, good-value stay in the heart of Potosí, and I would recommend it.

this hotel was one of the smaller ones on my tour of the Altiplano - I liked it a lot. Friendly staff at reception, small room, but well heated (very important in those cold nights). Convienient location, but no parking in front of hotel due to narrow streets in the colonial center.

L'Hostal Colonial è molto pittoresco, situato in una casa coloniale appunto, con tante piccole corti interne. Posizione ottima. Personale molto gentile, la ragazza alla reception ci aveva già cambiato la camera, con una più grande e più tranquilla, senza neanche il bisogno di chiederlo. La signora della colazione, dato che ho alcuni problemi di alimentazione, è stata gentilissima e molto disponibile ad aiutarmi. L'ultimo giorno abbiamo conosciuto un altro ragazzo della reception gentilissimo, che ci ha consigliato dove andare a mangiare la "Karapulka" piatto tipico di Potosì. Ci torneremmo sicuramente! hotel stile coloniale con un cortile interno colonnato dove con il bel tempo si può fare colazione. stanze e bagni piccoli ma puliti. personale gentile. arredamento in legno scuro con mobili e accessori coloniali. colazione molto spartana. è in una posizione centrale di fronte ad un ristorante , comodo per la cena.
