After hearing about The Fearrington House for years (and as big fans of Relais and Chateau properties all over the globe), we planned a little pre-Christmas getaway as a treat for my husband and I. We have heard wonderful things about the restaurant in particular and booked a dinner reservation for the two of us and another couple as well as afternoon tea because we love a good tea experience. I booked through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts which resulted in an upgrade to a very large suite. However, the accommodations are desperately in need of a refresh. They are quite dated and missing details for a property at this price point. The rug in the living room was placed without a rug pad and slipped and slid all over the place which was just plain unsafe. My husband used the jetted tub in the bathroom and debris (and hair… so gross) came out of the jets. The tiles in the bathroom were loose. The room was devoid of the little touches that usually make luxury boutique hotels so special to stay at. Now the food… our afternoon tea was extremely disappointing. The savory items were incredible stale, including a biscuit with pimento cheese that could have stood in for a hockey puck. (This is the south! It should be a crime to serve a bad biscuit!). The cucumber sandwich was all bread (all stale) with barely any filling. The service was also pretty terrible and slow and we didn’t have a server for the first 30 minutes we were there. The experience was hardly worth even half of the $50 per person price tag. The ambiance for dinner was lovely and I was excited about the seasonal tasting menu and wine pairing. My friend and I started with martinis that came very late and hers was about half as full as mine. I pointed this out to our waiter and he said “oh I hadn’t noticed.” He did however come back with more for her. Onto the food… the portions were very large for a tasting menu and the dishes were very hit or miss. I found several of my dishes to be quite bland, including the main course (New York *****). When each dish was served, the waitstaff would tell us the name of the dish and any sauce they poured over, but there were so many items on the plate that were unidentifiable without explanation so we just sort of guessed at what we were eating. The little in-between canapés and treats seemed, much like the tea, that they had been made quite some time ago. A ginger granita was so frozen that it flew out of the little jars it came in. Another small dessert with buttercream icing was still so refrigerated that it tasted old. On the plus side, the wine pairing and sommelier were great, but the meal overall was a B- at best. Again, not worth the price tag. I don’t regret giving The Fearrington House a try but I will not be returning or recommending it to friends. It seems like what once was a lovely place to stay is in need of a serious reboot.
