This is a country house hotel, the house looks older than it is (it is 19th century I believe built on the site of an earlier house, the estate is much older). The area is rural but the nearest town (Peebles) is just a few miles away and the drive from Edinburgh Airport was around half an hour. The rooms in the main house are large and elegantly furnished, there are several small bar areas and a spacious lounge (this kind of thing is important in Scotland, when one must expect some rainy days, having a comfortable room plus some attractive public areas in which to spend time is helpful). The hotel's grounds are very attractive, with a walled garden and lots of plantings along the walks inside the estate. The undoubtedly high cost of maintaining this type of property when there are only 14 or 15 rooms is reflected in the price, but for this kind of experience we were happy to pay it. The on-site restaurant, a beautiful dining room, offers a prix fixe dinner only-it was well prepared and presented and we enjoyed it very much, but I don't think there is an à la carte menu and the food was fairly rich (think venison, excellent fish, ham), we were attending a function our second night so only ate in the hotel once. Lunch has more conventional offerings. There is obviously a very accomplished chef and anyone staying here should use the restaurant at least once, it is of course the best in the area. Staff were very welcoming and the owner came in during dinner to introduce himself. There are not so many of this kind of country hotel left, and I hope this review may encourage someone to try it.
