Myself and a friend decided to visit The Painswick for an afternoon tea during the week. Whilst I have no complaints about the food, the service was disappointing and we were unable to finish our food due to the wasps troubling us inside. We were warned against using the garden due to a wasp's nest but, being a warm day, we tried our luck on the terrace. Orders were taken, food arrived and we tried to start. The wasps quickly found us and we moved into a lounge where some other guests were leaving. No staff were present to help. We tried to eat our food, still troubled by wasps landing on it, especially in the jam and cream. At one point there were 4 wasps in the jam dish but staff offered no help or assistance, or a cover to deter them or even a replacement when we informed the staff about the wasps in the jam. Nobody offered us further drinks after we'd finished our tea. I'm surprised that fresh plates aren't provided to eat sweet and savoury food from, but they're not. We asked for boxes to take our scones and carrot cakes away as we didn't want to use the jam or cream after so many wasps had landed in it. We had planned to have a "mocktail" afterwards but we were just glad to leave by then. You are clearly aware of the wasp's nest so please deal with the problem asap before someone gets badly stung. This is especially important if anyone has allergies. Staff pretty much ignored us while the wasps ruined our afternoon tea experience. Nobody wants to spend their special treat swatting wasps and watching them eating your food as we did. The hotel looks lovely and the food was beautiful but, please, sort this problem out.
