Bannatyne Hotel Darlington

--- **Stayed in September 2024** My first impression of this hotel was quite poor. Although reception was prepared for my arrival, the greeting was rather lackluster, and it was difficult to get a smile from the staff. Upon entering Room 20, I found it to be old but tasteful, with a small wardrobe tucked into a corner, a large room, big bed, and a spacious bathroom. There were only two coffees and four UHT milks provided. My room was situated above reception, and the constant thudding of the door below was quite annoying. If you decide to stay here, avoid Room 20. Parking was a challenge. I managed to squeeze my car into the car park, but I didn't see any designated disabled parking spaces. The lot had loose chippings, and the driveway was narrow. It seemed like there might be additional land available for parking, but I couldn't be sure. I only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was reminiscent of a typical Holiday Inn buffet—not terrible, but not memorable either. I requested poached eggs instead of the buffet's scrambled eggs, and while they arrived swimming in water on the plate, they were still nice. The rest of the breakfast options were bland, though you could find something to suit your needs. I was on a business trip for four days, but my plans changed and I had to cut my stay short. When I asked the hotel if they could keep my room available in case my plans changed, the response was a flat "No, that's fine." There was no empathy or acknowledgment, just a very bland interaction that made it clear they weren't particularly bothered. On returning from work on day one, I found that my room hadn’t been serviced. This was surprising, and when I inquired at reception, I was told, "It tells you in the room to request it." I explained that I hadn’t seen that information, and suggested it would be helpful to mention this at check-in. My comment was met with a shrug. No alternative was suggested. I asked if I could have coffee. Reception placed coffees two towels and UHT into a bannatybe shopping bag. “This is what we do” if they can inform me of breakfast times during check-in, but not the need to request room servicing. Stayed over on the 3rd August for an overnight spa experience, as a gift for my partners birthday. Got there, parking was terrible we had to squeeze right at the very back resulting in my partner having to climb over his seat to mine to get out. Checked in, had the executive double, very cramped and dirty especially the bathroom (see photos) WI-FI for TV was terrible had to connect our phones. Spa experience was amazing, treatments was relaxing.. well for myself anyway, my partner came from the treatment room with scratches all his back he said he felt her nails more than her hands. His back was a mess (see photo) wasn’t relaxing for him at all. Dinner was amazing back at the hotel, amazing food & amazing service couldn’t fault it, had a good sleep. ‘Hot’ breakfast was freezing not cold, freezing. Luckily they were more choice than just a hot breakfast as we filled up on croissants & jam for breakfast. Also, still waiting on the £20 deposit back from when we hired towel & robes from the spa.

This hotel is perfectly situated near to the centre but not too close you are unable to sleep! My partner and I decided to book a spontaneous night away. This hotel did not disappoint, very comfortable and friendly staff. We had breakfast the next day and really liked how you order your main dish so everything was hot and to your liking. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to stay again!

Beautiful old building. Our room was also lovely with comfy beds and a huge bathroom with excellent shower. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We stayed there with a spa package that was amazing value. Twin room, use of facilities at the local bannatyne gym (pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room, relaxation room) spa treatment each (facial, massage etc) 2 course dinner and breakfast. £180 for 2 people. Parking at the hotel is limited but we managed to get spaces. There’s a lovely garden out the back with chair’s and tables. Couple of minutes walk to the town centre which has summer great bars and restaurants.

I have been travelling to Darlington and staying here for many years. Unfortunately this time might be the last. Upon arrival no one could initially be found to check in. Then in the evening the restaurant and bar was deserted. After a long wait I left without the drink I originally wanted. You now need to notify the hotel you want your room serviced each day and breakfast is a simple cafe style buffet. I feel the hotel has had its day and will be trying alternatives in the area from now on.

Nice hotel , very large building inside, got lost. Nice size rooms. Clean. Includes a breakfast buffet with friendly staff. Car park on site. 5 minute walk into town. Only negative was the spa was a 7 minute drive. But would recommend this hotel.

Booked this hotel as convenient for travelling on to Newcastle by train. Room was comfy and lack of aircon wasn’t a problem but would have been a nice option. Clean and comfortable room, bathroom spotless. Lots of tea, coffee and biscuits provided which were very welcome. Very accommodating providing early breakfast on a Sunday for Great North Runners - much appreciated. Would definitely return.

Great to be back in Darlington in a very comfortable hotel, near the centre of town. I would happily return to this hotel. Great breakfast and pleasant staff.

Very good price to stay, bought online. As part of the deal you could use the Bannatyne facilities close by. The rooms were spacious comfortable and clean. The building itself is older but has character. We had dinner in the restaurant, there was a good choice of food and it was delicious. Staff are friendly and helpful. The bar area is rather small in the area we were in.
