Hotel Heliconia - Monteverde

Excellent hotel excellent staff good rooms ( no AC or heater but I guess it’s not needed because of monte verde weather ). Loved the stay and highly recommend to anyone visiting either families or couples or single friends. There suite is just amazing and is like a villa has multiple rooms ( 3 including a living room where you can party ). Other rooms are also very good with clean facilities

Friends, be warned! What I am recounting here is nothing but the truth and nothing has been distorted/exaggerated. My extremely poor opinion of this hotel is not based off one event, but a series of experiences around this place. Immediately upon arrival, we noticed that neither the Wifi nor the phone was working. There was no way to contact the front reception! The reception was a steep climb from the room, and I undertook at least 3 painful walks up and down to ask for a medley of different things that are standard to any half-decent accommodation, but were missing (coffee pods, then condiments, towels etc.). When we tried to shower, the glass door came unhinged, and we were scared that the entire glass pane may fall out and smash inside, hurting the occupant. We gingerly managed to shower, but then noticed that the water would not drain. There was an inch of stagnant soap water by the time we all finished. Gross! We complained about everything, they sent someone to fix the drainage, but did not do it right, and the same problem persisted for the following day. They said Wifi cannot be fixed since the technician is not around, so it would only be the following morning. Since we were completely cut off from the world (and the kids needed Wifi for their entertainment), we had to turn on our mobile roaming, incurring $12 per person. We went out for our adventure activities the following day, and when we returned, once again, they left us just 2 small coffee pods and no condiments. There were also only 3 towels when they knew we were 4 occupants in the room. They supposedly called in the Wifi technician, and said they fixed it, but it didn’t work. We called the front line manager to our room and he acknowledged that there was no Wifi. They did fix the drainage, but left the bathroom completely dirty and unusable for that day (the guy came in from the outside, with his soiled boots and messed the entire bathroom up). The following morning, when we went in for breakfast, there was no bread. They had also not labelled the food properly. I'm a vegetarian, and I ended up eating a piece of sausage because the guy said it’s all "Plantains". By this time my anger had grown into resentment, and affected my overall disposition towards our vacation. I was also VERY fed up of their nickel and diming, asking $ for everything (extra coffee pods). When I asked the front desk about what they can do to set all this right, they said "nothing"….the standard "sorry for the inconvenience, we know it is frustrating.." excuse. Folks, Costa Rica is an BEAUTIFUL Country with an AMAZING biodiversity in the cloud forest, and very friendly, welcoming and warm locals. Do NOT let this hopeless place rob you of the Pure Joys of vacationing there. By the time we finished I was seething in anger, and it had completely ruined the purpose of why I had gone there in the first place - to experience the pure wilderness, adventures of ziplining/white water rafting, etc. Please do

Stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms. Large rooms but very noisy as walls are paper thin. Shower good but poor ventilation in the bathroom. Bathroom door had a habit of self locking. Kids stayed in a separate part of the complex in an older cramped room with bathroom that required updating. Breakfast was fine and staff accommodating. Need to be fit as very hilly to get to and from the local restaurants.

Tony and Dillon were great and took good care of us during our stay. Awesome property with views of monteverde. The checkin and checkout was seamless. Restaurant was open during christmas with breakfast included. Will visit again. Thanks.

True rating would have been a 3.5, but the staff puts in the extra effort and treat guests so well that I rate them up at 4. My family of 4 ( parents and 2 boys) stayed in the family site with the loft room on a second floor. Room 300. -spacious -very comfortable beds -plenty of plugs for electronics -refrigerator -coffee maker, nesspresso machine that worked Now the areas that make the hotel a 3 or 3.5 are some basics that I am surprised the hotel has not figured out and corrected. Monteverde is a Cloud Forest and it seems to most or rain a lot of the time. One wears jackets and clothes that need to be hung up to dry. By the front door there are 2 walls where the hotel needs to put a coat rack. Nice wooden rack to match the wood in the room, simple pegs of wood, at least 5 on each wall. The LARGE living room has 3 Empty corners where tables should be placed, in each corner, so items can be placed on the tables. We ended up using the floor which is kind of ridiculous. On the back of the door into the bedroom and definitely on the back of the bathroom door pegs for hanging jackets and towels (bathroom) need to be placed. Another hand towel rack/hanger and consider a shelf where extra towels can be placed. Typically this would be under the sink but there is no place to put towels other than the single rack that holds only 2 for a room that can sleep 6. In the shower replace the soap bar shelf (in room 300 it looks like there was one but removed) Outside of the bathroom on the cabinet structure MORE hanging hooks or pegs for clothes, towels, etc, I cannot stress this enough. We had to hang things I all sorts of places and use the stairs’ decorative wood cutouts to hold clothes. ******IMPORTANT!!!****** The lower stairs going to the loft need to have cushions on the metal frames of the steps that are exposed. WAY TOO EASY TO BANG ONE’s head on a corner there when getting something out of the fridge which is under the stairs. A pool noddle cut in half or a cushion of some sort, painted black to blend in. I hung items from these steps to prevent kids injuries . And lastly, get curtain belts or cords to tie up the curtains near the porch door… the wind would blow the curtains into the door and it would slam shut damaging the curtains and pulling them off their track… think of installing blinds in just the window. These critical points improve the room and stay 100%. It is in the details !!! Staff is excellent Dillon Bryan Joshua Jose (maintenance) Maids Etc Without heat or AC Heliconia will remain 4 Star max

You want to stay here!! We loved staying at Hotel Heliconia! It was the perfect place for us to rest and have breakfast during a weekend of exploring Monteverde and Santa Elena. The hotel has huge rooms, cosy touches and warm hospitality. We received welcome drinks upon arrival and loved the breakfasts each morning. Two in our family are gluten free, and they immediately made a plan to get gluten free bread and GF flour which made us feel very cared for. We loved the views, the towels, linens and the well landscaped property. And the sunsets were gorgeous! We did all the things at Selvatura Park which is owned by the same family as the hotel. A great pairing for an incredible experience. 5 stars all around. Loved it!
