The cave room was truly romantic and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very spacious and very detailed in the cave. With seating area at the entrace with a TV. We also had a coffee machine and fridge and wine with glasses. The bathroom rain forest shower was amazing. Matera is an amazing must see town. Would stay more than just a night maybe 2. We parked our car outside the city and had a shuttle private transfer to thw hotel which the hotel recommended. This was truly woth it. The lights in the room was romantic and the breakfast was like a big family sitting together. It's a must stay when you go to Matera. People mentioned it has a cave like smell and damp. We did not fell that at all. Staff was frendly and recommended places to see. The city looks also so lovely at night time with all the lights. The hotel.is in the heart of the city and if we came back this place would see us again.

Wow!! We started our trip to Puglia here and were absolutely not disappointed From our initial greeting our treatment was absolutely 5 star and the accommodation and surroundings could not have been better. A absolute treat. And the wine was 5 star too

it is an attractive building in the centre of Matera with a good breakfast but the hotel design is totally impractical as there is no holder for the toilet roll ( we ended up putting the toilet roll on the floor), nom privacy in the bathroom mas the ancient wooden folding door has an inch gap at the bottom, there is no shower curtain so the water falls onto the floor at the entrance to the bathroom ,the wash basin has a u curve in the front so the water splashes out and the tap cannot be adjusted to have a smaller flow. Very strange as it could be top class but isn't

The hotel was fine but BEWARE GETTING TRAFFIC VIOLATION FINES from the local authority. We were told by the hotel that we could take our hire car briefly inside the historic area to drop off and collect luggage. We did this at each end of our stay in September 2022 and parked the car in an authorised zone for the rest of the time. One year later we have received 2 fines of 100 euros for each infraction. We also incurred administration fees from the hire car company. We asked the hotel if they could help us with this, but received no reply. We decided to just pay the fines as they can double if an appeal is unsuccessful. Our stay in Matera turned out be a very expensive experience.

The room we had - 3 - was a cave room. Damp, obviously no windows so claustrophobic I felt. Nowhere to put anything, bathroom was musty and not completely enclosed. If you turned off the humidifier it became musty, with it on it was imposition sleep. Moving on to a different area and unpacking clothes, they all felt damp. Breakfast was pleasant but a communal table which if it was full was uncomfortable.. Matera was I retesting but a day is enough.

The smell made the stay uncomfortable even though they put us in a room that was not a cave. Still strong musty odors and they try to cover it up with perfumes. I wouldn’t have booked here from the other reviews. Shame on me for not checking closely behind my tour company.

Architects, artists, cave enthusiasts and couples under 40—don’t miss a stay at this unique property. For the rest of us, well, there are issues. If you have asthma or allergies, stay away. The caves are naturally musky and the hotel uses very strong fragrance sprays to mask it. If your sight isn’t great, it’s a challenge. Again, it’s a cave, and there’s only one light source. In my room, the one light source was a windowed wall that people walked by and could easily see into. My option was to draw the drapes for privacy but be in darkness except for the sexy, but dim “boutique” lighting provided. I found it claustrophobic. And last but not least, the bathroom. Yes, preserve the integrity of the cave walls, but maybe insulate the shower with plexiglass so the mold isn’t so visible and encroaching. And better ventilation is desperately needed, especially the bathroom area. Sleeping in a cave is an experience, if you’re up to it. And I believe Il Palazzotto is at the top of the category. I did love the sitting area outside my room (#6) and took advantage of it. The lobby was stunning; the wines excellent. Shout-out to the exceptionally helpful Danila. But whether you stay in a Sassi hotel, or choose just to visit the area, Matera is a must-see. You’ll never forgot it.

Amazing experience. We were there in the quiet season and the entire place was magical. Rooms are decorated beautifully and can't believe that cave dwelling can be so luxurious. Each room is also designed differently to suit the structure of the cave. Definitely worth the stay

We stayed in a family suite and although it was big I will not recommended to anyone. The toilet is so small and the water leaked to the whole floor all the way towards the kitchen. Lack of necessity too. This room has no mirror. Breakfast is below the par and we didn’t feel the warm hospitality. From the reception we knew already we made a mistake on booking here. They were unresponsive and lazy. We should have stayed in sextantio. We didn’t slept well as the humidifier kept on making loud noise so if your a light sleeper it will wake you up and it happened multiple times at night. The reception just suggested to turn it off. Turning that off at night will make whole room smell since it’s a cave. Damasco parking that they suggest is good but the shuttle we encountered does not have aircon. On a very hot weather we were very disappointed. Charged all premium you want but you must deliver. For this case it was an overall failure. We regret staying here. Zero star for all but giving one star due to The Central location. We booked our own tour.
