Sunset Condominiums

It is hard to go by the reviews because each room is independently owned. We stayed at applewood 204. Room was the size of a hotel room. Not a lot of places to unpack the luggage. Room was updated and very clean. Bed was comfortable but walls are really thin and you can hear neighbors. There is a bridge view but the pillars are blocked by a tree. For the best view go to Stonecliff next door. It’s about 40 minutes from town if you are taking the carriage or walking. The walk to the grand hotel and town are not bad since it is downhill. Carriages are 10.50 per person each way. It says there are 24/7 carriages but when I called to book one I was told my only option was 7:15 or the standard 9:00. Great if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of town.

These condos are very outdated. They are dirty, I could write in the dust on the furniture and the maid let us in after she finished "cleaning". The refrigerator has a leak so there is a bin on the top shelf and a sign that tells you to dump the water as needed. The bathroom has a bar of lights where 5 of the 8 lightbulbs are burned out. Our "view" of the lake was a tall forest of trees. The lake and Mighty Mack were literally in the back yard and we couldn't see it. The upside was the location. Yes it is a 2 mile mostly uphill ride which we already knew, but the condos are part of the Stonehill Inn complex which is one of the priciest spots on the island. You get to use many of their amenities. They have a gorgeous yard with Adirondack chairs and Solo fire pits where you can sit and watch the sunset by the Mighty Mack! You can stroll the grounds and walk to Sunset rock that looks out over everything and watch an amazing sunset there! Spectacular! There is a general store for coffee and snacks. There are 3-4 restaurants that are comparable in price to downtown. It should be cleaner. It could be more updated. But we enjoyed our visit.

Clean and good view but …Not what I expected. It was far from the main area so you really need to plan your time out wisely. My husband and I brought our bikes so we didn’t have to pay for the shuttle or taxi which is $10.50/person one way. It is faster to walk or bike than to take the shuttle. Our unit was supposed to have. Kitchenette it only had a small bar fridge and microwave. The walls are paper thin so we could hear everything g from the room beside us. If you want quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the main area this is a good spot. The price was good but we wish we had paid a bit more for a bed and breakfast in town.

I recently went to Mackinac Island for the first time with friends for an afternoon as part of a girl's trip to northern MI and the UP.  To say I was enchanted is an understatement.  I just came back to the island to look at buildable lots and wanted to stay in a less “touristy” area closer to the lots I was looking at.  Sunset Condos was in the perfect location and they have some of the best prices on the island so I immediately booked.  Now, I worked in hospitality for a number of years, so I take online reviews of properties with a grain of salt.  When you’re paying some of the lowest prices on the island, you can’t expect the level of service, amenities, and conditions provided by The Grand.  I thought Sunset Condos was charming and very well-appointed.  So many people on here are complaining about the tiniest things, it’s ridiculous and likely not at all the majority of experiences.  It is very close to the Stonecliffe Manor and the Woods Restaurant (the Schnitzel will rock your world!).  I loved that the location is tucked back away from the hustle and bustle, it immerses you in the forest and is quite beautiful. I stayed in room 104 at Pinewood and I thought it was excellent!  It was nicely decorated, very clean, and had an amazing view of the lake from the back patio.  The bed was very comfortable, and I loved lazing in bed and enjoying the view.  Let’s be real here though, no one is coming to the island to spend all day in a room.  It was the perfect place to come back to and relax in between activities.  I had no issues with hearing my neighbors any more than I would have in any hotel.  Yes, I could hear exterior doors closing and footsteps above, I would’ve heard that anywhere and it didn’t detract from my experience whatsoever.  Maybe I had more considerate neighbors than others, but I never once heard my neighbors talking from inside the condo like others have claimed.  As a little travel tip, if you take the back route behind the condos down to the loop (M185 aka Lakeshore) you will get some gorgeous views of the lake and the gardens of the surrounding properties, and it gets you down to the lake at the perfect spot for some Mighty Mac pictures!  It’s an easy ride to town from there along the coast as well, or you can do the whole loop in the other direction. I will absolutely be back to stay at Sunset Condos and plan to spend a lot more time on Mackinac.  I would recommend Sunset Condominiums to any of my friends and family who do not have mobility issues.  People who would struggle with the uphill climb either walking or on a bike would probably enjoy something closer to town as the horse taxi service can take a while to get up to the condos.  You can rent certain e-bikes and mobility scooters for people with mobility issues, but staying closer to downtown would probably be more enjoyable in those circumstances. I also discovered that some of the bike rental places will not rent to you if they know you are staying up there

We had read some bad reviews of this place so we didn’t have high hopes but all in all we had a good stay here are would stay here again. The condo units are dated (at least ours was) and it is true that you can hear footsteps and such through the walls but the location is great, we had good communication and support from the staff, checkin was easy, the rep met us at the ferry dock, luggage was delivered on time and we liked having a unit with a kitchen. The condos have an amazing sunset view and are adjacent to the Inn at Stonecliffe, one of the best properties on the island. Consider the fact that these condos are less than half the cost of many other hotels on the island and they are a great value.

Great place! Our second time in Mackinac Island. The first time we stayed at Mission Point and this time Sunset Condos/Sandlewood. We stayed in the Condo Suite and I was impressed! Very spacious, with a full size kitchen, washer and dryer, a nice deck, very clean, friendly staff and I loved the location! It’s about a 35 minute walk to the downtown area. You can also take the taxi, but that can take at least 45 minutes one way. Also the taxi charges $10.50 per person one way, so make sure to add that to your budget. You can also rent bikes to go back and forth between the Condo and downtown, but be prepared to ride uphill :-) But overall, we were very happy with our stay at Sunset Condominiums!

This place is literally the worst. I’ve been to 3 third world countries and had better accommodations. First off there’s no Air Conditioner and there’s junk everywhere outside our unit. There’s a broken coffee maker just sitting on a dresser and a working coffee maker set up for use. The place is a dump with random furniture and the bathroom is filthy. The management staff has been of no help, actually laughable at best. I’d sleep on the streets before ever spending a dime here again. We drive 5 hours to have a last summer get away, however due to our surroundings, we are leaving two days early. Shame on the management staff and owners.

We stayed for the extended 4th of July weekend, 2024. At first glance the room appeared clean and neat. The bed was comfortable, and we had a very nice view of the lake. We were pleased with what we found, but looks can be deceiving.... After sleeping there the night of the 4th, we woke up to discover we were sleeping on sheets that had multiple stains on them. I got up and took a shower, and discovered the bath towels were in a similar condition. We also noted that the tub shower did not drain properly and the water was ankle deep by the time you were finished showering. Additionally, there were no towel bars on which to hang our used towels. I spoke to someone else staying in the same building and was told a similar story. On two of the 4 nights of our stay, my wife tried to shower before going to bed and discovered there was no hot water. After the first occurrence, we called and complained about this, as well as the drain and the sheets and towels. They tried to tell us on the phone that our unit was fed hot water by two large tanks and that running out of hot water was highly improbable, but that they would come and take a look at the hot water situation, the shower drain, and get us some new sheets/towels. Not only did this not happen, but the next night there again was no hot water for a shower. I don't normally leave negative reviews, but this was an extreme case. For what we paid I expected much better. Before going home we stayed in a small motel in the Straits area that was clean and well kept, with plenty of hot water. They charged 1/2 the price.

This was the worse stay I have ever had in my 55 years of travel.. It is NOT what they project on their website.. Rooms are falling apart. Very outdated.. Walls dirty and chipped, Fans are at least 20 years old, greasy and dirty.. Wallboards falling off.. Sliding door doesn't lock.. SAFETY??? I could go on and on.. Called and didn't offer to take anything off my CC..
