The Inn & Tavern at Meander

This gem of an historic property gave the two of us a wonderful anniversary getaway! The summer kitchen with its gas fireplace downstairs & its wood-burning fireplace upstairs, the soaking tub, the huge and comfortable bed, wooden floors with period square nails and lovely vistas from the windows created the perfect ambience of a peaceful time in the country. We enjoyed a truly first-class breakfast in terms of selection, taste and presentation. The sunset over the inn proved spectacular, as well. Keep in mind that this is not a new property meant to look old. As a pre-Revolutionary home, it's a step back in time, holding a unique charm and personality ready to win the hearts of discerning guests.

What a wonderful weekend we had in the Summer Kitchen at the Inn & Tavern at Meander. You first enter through the white brick columns and make you way up the driveway to the striking home at the top of the knoll that immediately transports you back in time. Our cottage was used as the kitchen for the main house 200 plus years ago and has been transformed to a well appointed spacious living space with modern conveniences and the most comfortable bed that gave us the best night's sleep. Dinner and breakfast were made order and so delicious. We were greeted on arrival by the general manager Daniel who we had the added bonus of speaking with throughout our stay. He is well versed in the incredible history of the home, grounds and surrounding area and shared some wonderful stories with us. The property is a work in progress which we liked. If you are seeking all modern amenities, this is not the place for you but if you are looking for a tranquil escape from the bustle of city life and a respite in the county, you'll love it here as we did. We truly felt like guests in a friends a home and can't wait to return.

Beautiful, historic property with lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Charming rooms with fireplaces and we were able to use the public areas in the evening, which were lovely. Had a balcony off our room with gorgeous views. Close to Montpelier (home of James and Dolley Madison), which is why we chose this property. Also a short drive to Orange, Va. The only down side was breakfast was only offered at 8:30 a.m. and we had to leave at that time as we had tour tickets to Monticello, and so missed breakfast. Would have been nice if there were 2 breakfast times offered such as 7:30 a.m. for people with early departures as well as the 8:30 a.m. breakfast. At the very least, a Continental breakfast could be offered for the early guests. Also, I might mention that guests staying during the early part of the week should know they would have to drive into town for dinner as the restaurant is not open the earlier part of the week. This did not present too much of a problem for us. The staff was friendly and we were made to feel welcome. It was a treat to stay in such a lovely, historical home and would love to visit again.

Went for wedding anniversary. Stayed in the Lightfoot Room in the Manor House. The location and setting are beautiful, the history of the place in enchanting, its clean, the breakfast was excellent, and Gen. Mgr. Daniel was very friendly and accommodating. However, the pictures and descriptions on the website are very deceiving. The manor house and grounds are badly in need of maintenance and renovation. The common rooms, with the exception of the dining room, are stark, and uninviting: devoid of any quality furnishings or decoration.The overall appearance is run down. Our room had a very noisy window A/C unit that recycled every 2 minutes (20 secs on, 2 mins off......) that made sleep nearly impossible. The chairs in the room were old and worn, the cushions flat, and the bathroom very inconvenient and in need of renovation, We had booked 3 nights, but stayed only one as we could not face another night without sleep. WE explained our concerns to GM Daniel, and he listened politely and apologize for the problems, but offered no real consolation. We paid in advance over $600 for the 3 nights and were give only a partial refund of $78. Very disappointed in our experience.

Husband's birthday kidnapping for a 1-night getaway. We stayed in the Groom's Cottage which at one time used for the horse groomers to live. Charming, private, and oddest place I've ever visited. Nice bed and bedding but absolutely no place to sit except the nasty, old hide-a-bed sofa left from the 80s complete with creepy, decorator pillows full of holes. We went outside and grabbed 2 rusted-out chairs from the patio and brought them in to use, sweltering outside. Wouldn't sit out anyway, the total area hadn't been maintained in years- overgrown, uneven open spaces and walkways and bushes and trees untrimmed for years. In honesty, the whole place hasn't been maintained in quite a while, falling apart and neglected. Slept well with little AC maintaining temperature however the rattle of plumbing in the middle of the night would speak of something living there besides us. Closed sink and tub traps, shut the bath door, and went back to sleep. We did not eat dinner here the night we stayed, the restaurant was not open. Didn't do breakfast either, a bit late for us, so I can't comment on any of the food or service. Probably would not stay here again- just my opinion.

Everything about our stay at the Inn and Tavern at Meander was delightful! It's a beautiful colonial era estate that preserves a welcoming, authentic and comfortable sense of the times. Everyone on staff was a pleasure to be with and and Sunday Supper on the porch of the Inn was delicious.. Our suite was large and well decorated. We enjoyed just being in the manor house and walking the grounds. The General Manager, Mr. Daniel Bushey, went out of his way to make our visit memorable.

Wonderful views! The old home, built in 1756 (you'll find out more about the history while here), is beautiful. We were given a brief tour of the main mansion upon check-in and some history about the home and the area. The room was clean and cozy. The bed was very comfortable. We stayed in the Lightfoot Suite.

We did a 2 night get-away from DC to the Meander. Our first time there - but definitely not our last. Currently the Inn is very rustic - with all the charm (& some hiccups) that comes along with a house built in the 1700s. However, the cottages are modern, updated and spacious - many with fireplaces and private patios. Dinner was a delight - a wonderful pre fixe menu with plenty of options. All four of us loved our meal with nice selection of wines from the local wineries. As good as dinner was - breakfast was even better. Sitting out on the porch, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mts with a steaming cup of coffee and gourmet breakfast options - a lazy, lingering morning - yep. But even better than that is the staff - Daniel and Chandra are always there ready to answer any questions, give suggestions or help with any issues. Within an hour, you feel as if you've known them for years. They are the true heart and soul of this Inn. We cant wait to go back and see all the changes planned. What a gem of a place in the country.

My husband surprised me with a spectacular get a way for our anniversary. How fabulous to find this wonderful B&B in Locust Dale, Virgina. Not only is it charming and filled with historical facts, but the dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! And let’s talk about the view of the Blue Ridge at sunset!! Daniel, the general manager, made us feel so welcome and made sure our stay was memorable. We had a private cabin that was a great blend of coziness and charm. The rest of the staff was friendly and always accommodating! We can’t return to explore more of the area and all it has to offer:-)
