I’m writing to share my recent experience at Borrowdale Gates Hotel, which unfortunately fell short of the high standards I previously enjoyed. Following a wonderful first visit in January—despite the issue of having no hot water in the Castle Kreg room, which was resolved efficiently—I was assured we could return and stay in the same room to enjoy the full experience. Based on this, I booked a stay for July (11th–13th), but due to a family wedding, I had to move the dates to the weekend of July 18th–20th to coincide with my partner’s birthday. In the weeks leading up to our stay, I attempted to confirm the promised room upgrade via email and by calling the hotel multiple times. Unfortunately, I received no response to my emails, and my phone calls went unanswered. Assuming this had been noted as previously discussed, we made our way to the hotel. After a long 10-hour drive on Friday, I called the hotel en route to book a dinner reservation, as our package included both dinner and breakfast. I was informed by Kate—who was unfortunately very rude—that our booking only included bed and breakfast. Unable to access the full invoice on my phone, I canceled the dinner booking, not wanting to be charged again for something already included. We had no choice but to purchase food elsewhere that evening. Upon arrival, we were assigned Room 11—not Castle Kreg, as promised. I raised this at reception and was asked to forward my original invoice to clarify our booking details, which I did. Later, my partner and I had a few drinks, which I paid for in cash directly to the lovely Poppy, who provided excellent service. However, when checking out the following morning, Kate was again unhelpful and argumentative. She insisted I should have spoken to her earlier, even though her colleague had instructed me to speak with her Sunday morning. She also attempted to charge me for the drinks I had already paid for, and despite all the confusion and miscommunication, still insisted I pay the full amount—despite not having received the dinner included in the original package. This experience has been incredibly disappointing, particularly given how much we enjoyed our first visit. The lack of communication, failure to honor our agreed room and package, and the poor customer service from Kate throughout our stay were all unacceptable. I will be escalating this matter further, but wanted to share this feedback so that future guests are aware of our experience.
