Henderson Castle Inn

We drove 1 1/2 hours to enjoy High Tea here. The outside of the castle is gorgeous! We were the only people inside for tea and now I know why. The paper tea menus were stained with tea, there were no tea cups but basic cream coffee cups and plates. The food was delivered on a 3 tiered silver plate stand and consisted of items you can purchase at Sam’s club- mini quiche, scones, spinach pies, a large blueberry muffin and 2 ham, cheese and cucumber on a croissant. The historical tour was fun and the tour guide was knowledgeable.

Pure relaxation in a Castle. Love the rooftop hot tub and the sauna. I can't wait to return and dine at the restaurant and enjoy more of the Castle feel. Staff and front desk was great and very informative.

The tour was very nice , though the guide was new. The castle for the most part very nice and I enjoyed the experience of visiting such a unique place. It does need some TLC (unfished painting, dirty vents, holes in the wall) but we enjoyed our stay. The wine tasting lacked however. Was supposed to get 6 tastings, they ran out of the one and didn't offer anything for that and we were supposed to get a charcutier board but again, never came, this was to be our snack before we ventured into Kalamazoo for a few hours before we came back for dinner. However without receiving this we ended up cancelling our dinner since we needed to eat something while we were out. Then morning breakfast was supposed to start at 8, even if you did the one that was included. Came down a bit after 8 and only juice and coffee was out. When we left at 9 still nothing and there were supposed to be croissants, granola, etc. Again should have refunded us for something for the trip. I know the castle is for sale but there is definitely work to be done.

The tour was very nice (though the guide seemed new/a bit unsure of himself). The castle for the most part very nice and I enjoyed the experience of visiting such a unique place. The wine tasting accompanying it was a pleasant addition (though, there again... there was a slight problem of their having "run out" of one of the wines...

My new husband and I went for the couple’s spa package, which includes an hour in the rooftop hot tub, an hour massage or time in the sauna, and other amenities, including champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. Our massage therapist greeted us warmly at the front desk, and we were taken to the third floor, where a beautiful and serene therapy room was set up. After spending our time in the hot tub, which was relaxing and offered some very cool views of the surrounding neighborhoods, downtown Kalamazoo, and castle architecture, we came back down for our couples massage. The massage was thorough and just the right amount of pressure to walk the line between therapeutic and pleasurable. All in all, a five star experience at the castle spa, AND 52% off with a Groupon discount! Highly recommend for a unique spa experience.

After booking an event with these people, that they canceled, not due to weather. They kept my money! They wouldn't respond to email or phone calls. I had to go to some trouble to get my money back through PayPal. Always look at reviews! Go not by reputation alone...

PSA! I booked the Tour, Wine Tasting, Massage and Spa package. I THOUGHT that this was going to be a romantic day/evening. Upon walking into the castle/front desk, there were 2 employees trying to figure out how the massages got double booked. Which was an immediate flag. We waited 20 minutes for the tour to start as the staff were underprepared. While waiting we noticed that all of the flowers were dying/building mold. NOTHING was dusted. The place was just dingy. I realize that the castle is 128 Years old. It seems the age/historical prestige of the property was being used as justification for not performing basic upkeep! There seems to be no baseline for cleanliness pertaining to the inside of the castle. Upon entering the kitchen during the tour, there were old wine corks on the ground(no big deal), however, you could see where someone had spilled something previously and just never bothered to clean it up. After taking the tour a gathering a scope of exactly how dirty this place is, we could not bring our selves to stay for the wine tasting or the massage. This venue was so dirty, we decided to call it a loss as far as our expenses. As we DID NOT feel comfortable touching ANYTHING, much less drinking/eating or laying on the tables for massages. Please be wary when booking a stay or visit here, as it is most likely NOT what you expect. I wish I could apologize for this review; however, this is the sum of MY experience.

Room and castle ok but whatever you do don’t eat there! It is not luxury and the dining either needs revamped or closed down! Owner is nice and massages I would recommend and I don’t even like massages.

New Year's Eve at the Henderson Castle was something we will always remember. We actually decided to get married and chose the castle for the location and New Year's Eve for the day because we live right here in Kalamazoo and they have an annual masquerade ball on that night.… So perfect night to get married. Very small ceremony. Only five guests. We booked the Italian suite and We got married right in our room. We then went downstairs to have drinks at the bar, dinner at the restaurant, and then up to the third floor for the masquerade ball festivities and then the rooftop to look out over the city and the nighttime skyline. Also at midnight on the roof you'll see fireworks being set off all over the city. Everything far exceeded our expectations. The staff knew we were getting married that night so when we unlocked our door we discovered they had put champagne on ice and spread rose petals around our room. I feel awful I cannot remember her name but our hostess when we checked in also became our waitress later that night. She was extremely attentive cheerful and welcoming as both. Wether topping off our waters during dinner or bringing us champagne all around, the entire staff was attentive and wonderful. Our room and all of our guests rooms were each unique in their own way. The Italian room has green marble floors that are actually heated and are warm to walk on. (Keep in mind if there is a party in the ballroom that night the Italian room is directly below it so you will hear dancing on the ceiling but unless you turn in early it'll probably be over by the time you go to bed anyhow) I've heard bad reviews and I don't understand it. (The bed wasn't new or there was a draft in one of the windows etc)... It's a Castle! If you want sterile then stay at a Hilton. I guarantee you'll never remember a night at a Hilton because they are just like all the other nights at any other hotel. But Walking through the hallways and up-and-down the stairs with dim lit ambience... a bartender and maître D that make you feel like you've stepped into a Humphrey Bogart movie… The Henderson Castle is something you will never forget.
