The Fir Tree Country Hotel

Excellent food, mains looked good, but so did everything else so I had 2 starters and the beef dip off the lunch menu. Friendly welcome, seating inside and out. Good service. We weren’t staying, but looks like offers for accommodation packages. Recommended.

Currently enjoying our 2nd evening staying at The Fir Tree whilst we enjoy some sightseeing in the North. Every member of staff since we arrived has been friendly and helpful. Our room is absolutely spotless with super quality bedding, two choices of pillow, and great facilities. But the star of the show has been the food! Quality ingredients, fabulously cooked and generous portions! And that covers both the breakfast and evening meals. Our trips away are often ‘all about the food’, and on this occasion we have ate so well it’s been absolutely wonderful. Can thoroughly recommend eating here but definitely book a table.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for four nights at the end of June 2024 and were very pleased with all aspects of our stay. The bedrooms are adjacent to the main building, being recently refurbished in a tasteful modern style and containing a small en-suite with toilet and shower. Two bedside lockers and a chest of drawers provide adequate storage, but it lacks a full wardrobe. Hanging space is provided by a shelf with clothes hangers and hooks. TV is available in each room. The room was spotless on arrival and every morning the room was fully cleaned and all towels replaced. Breakfast in included in the room price, but the evening meal isn’t and is paid for, as are any drinks, each evening. They don’t operate a tab system. The menu reflects its County Durham location, they are very substantial, well prepared and presented by friendly and knowledgeable staff. In summary, it’s a spacious village pub and local restaurant, that offers good quality B&B with the option taking evening meals, that are booked as required. The Sunday carvery is highly popularly with people living in the area and early booking is essential if you want a proper County Durham dinner.

We booked at short notice but what a lovely hidden gem! Free parking and set in a beautiful spot. The room was excellent, clean and cosy! The restaurant and bar staff were very friendly. Food was very good. Loved the cheesecake and Gin! Thank you!

Having stayed here twice before for New Year, we booked in again. The room was spotless clean, warm & a comfy bed. Lovely hot shower & big fluffy towels. Tea, coffee etc. Great menu & excellent meal. Tasty breakfast too 😊 The staff were all brilliant,helpful & friendly. Booked for next New Year! 😊🎉

Booked in at the hotel for a three night stay between Christmas and New Year. The Rooms and beds are small but clean, well decorated and have everything you need. The food menu is extensive, very reasonably priced, absolutely first class quality and matched with excellent service. Travelling frequently, for a three star hotel, I would match this place against any other three star in the country and highly recommend it for food and or accommodation. Make sure you book!
