The Royal Oak is an attractive hotel and pub overlooking the green in the centre of the lovely village of Great Ayton. Originally a Coaching Inn it has all the historic old beams and decor you would expect and has a cosy charm. It also fits the bill as a modern day hotel and our double room was spacious and comfortable, and the en-suite is modern, nicely fitted out, and includes good quality toiletries and big, thick, fluffy towels. Breakfast is simple in terms of choice, which suited us perfectly, and after juice and grapefruit segments we enjoyed a substantial Full English which was top class in every respect. I have three simple requirements of a cooked breakfast, ie top quality ingredients; perfectly cooked and nicely presented - and that’s what you get here. The sausage and thick cut bacon were really good, and top marks must go to the black pudding which is as tasty as you could get. Everything else was spot on and when you consider that non-guests can have this for just over £12 it represents great value. Service was also very good, as it has been throughout our short stay, and we look forward to a return visit.
