My husband and I were on a second honeymoon to Sri Lanka, eager to try out the South and what wildlife it had to offer. The Birds Resort seemed a perfect location from which to visit Bundala and Udawalawe National Parks. It's situated in the peaceful countryside with large and comfortable modern rooms fronting a lake. The adjacent Bird Park is an added attraction (free to hotel guests), but there was plenty of birdlife in the gardens. For me the main draw was the chance to feed their tame elephants every evening on the reception steps! The food in the restaurant is mainly geared up for Sri Lankan or other Asian guests, but they offered both Eastern and Western menus. Choice was limited and you had to order your dinner at breakfast due to low occupancy at the time of our visit. But we did experience one buffet which had plenty of choice of both kinds. The standard of both types of food was excellent. One snag we hit was that the hotel currently has no liquor licence, despite the fact that it has a large bar area, and indeed advertised sundowners on its own website. They could sell beer (and provide to the room mini bar). We brought in and consumed wine from outside, with their permission, to overcome this, but it was unexpected and hopefully only temporary. Special mention must go to the lovely reception and wait staff, the former being as helpful and informative as any I've ever come across (including picking up on the fact that we were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary); the latter being cheerful and super-efficient despite there being a bit of a language problem. We had a restful and very pleasant time here, getting away from it all and relaxing around the pool after our early morning starts. You would definitely need your own driver like us, or other transport, as it is quite isolated. Our travel agent took a bit of a risk in booking this for us as they had not used it before, and they weren't really geared up to accommodate our driver as in the other hotels we visited, but we think that if you want a relaxing and peaceful base without all the usual luxury trimmings, the room, pool and grounds are perfectly good enough. Pity about the alcohol licence though!
