On the banks of the River Thurso in the village of Halkirk, this hotel is a 10-minute drive from Thurso town centre. It is built from Caithness stone, and has free Wi-Fi and free parking on site. Once a blacksmith’s workshop, the bar at Ulbster Arms Hotel near Thurso offers a range of drinks and has a 42-inch plasma TV. A full cooked breakfast is provided each morning, and lunch and evening meals are served in Anglers Nook. All rooms are provided with free local toiletries and locally baked biscuits, as well as tea & coffee making facilities, flat-screen satellite tv & desk space. A handful of our Deluxe Double Rooms have a lovely view over looking the River Thurso, these can be requested if preferred. The nearby town of Thurso is the most northerly on Scotland’s mainland. Thurso Golf Club is 5 miles from Ulbster Arms, and Thurso Rail Station is 6 miles away. The Ulbster Arms got everything right and I strongly recommend it for anyone who expects first class service. Our lodge was comfortable stylish and warm, the restaurant had great atmosphere and the staff are professional and friendly but the food is outstanding and you can understand why it’s so popular. One stand out was the children’s menu which was the same quality and presentation as the full menu even the “ mocktail” was no problem even although it was not on the menu. Highest praise goes to breakfast and again the quality is superb, there are skilled chefs at work here, special mention to Liz who saw to our every need and gave great advice on the area and the history of the hotel. The hotel sits right on the river Thurso and is popular with fishermen but I think it’s the food that attracts them, it is a must try it if you are anywhere near Halkirk.

Out for a meal and let me tell you the food is soooooooo good,too bloody good,that I way over induldge and ended up having to take some home some for later.Very reasonably priced if you pay for quality you get quality that's why it is and always will be a favourite of mine to dine out at.The staff are another level,go above and beyond to make your experience the best and there is nothing they don't know about the local area.Now to relax in the library area by the roaring fire and try and enjoy my pint of local ale if I can fit it in that is.Really is a much needed place to visit if your in the area or live locally,could not recommend enough.you will not be disappointed.Thanks so much look forward to seeing you again soon.🙂

I have visited the Ulbster Arms on a number of previous occasions and the quality of service and overall experience have never faltered. If it is any recommendation, I travel from New Zealand purely to enjoy the fishing the atmosphere and the hospitality of staff and service of everyone at the hotel. Special mentions are not necessary as everyone there works so hard to do all that they can to look after their clients. If you want big flash ostentatious soul-less lodging then go elsewhere, if you want a true wholesome homely atmosphere, great food sourced locally, a yarn in the bar and a comfy bed you should spend a night or two here. Special word for Karla, the very best of luck to you on your new journey.

First time staying at the Ulbster Arms in Halkirk. Staff are friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. My room was clean and tastefully decorated, the bed was very comfortable ,just what's needed after a long day on the river. Great hearty breakfast menu to set you up for the day. Dined in the bar in the evenings and was glad to see the kitchen using locally sourced ingredients. Good wholesome food. Advisable to book a table for the evening as it can get busy. My trip was for fishing on the RiverThurso which flows beside but is also a great base for exploring the North Highlands too. I certainly recommend staying at the Ulbster Arms and will definitely be returning. Lee

Came here a few years ago and had the best steak I had ever had. So came back since I was in the area but sadly not the same. I can only assume they have changed supplier as the steak was nowhere near the quality that it used to be. Spoke to a few friends with live locally amd they said the same. Such a shame. Staff are excellent and friendly still but let down by meat quality.

A fantastic stay yet again for a short fishing break. Jess and the team looked after us tremendously well as always, and a special thank you to Holly for sorting out a last minute room for me thanks to a booking error on my part. Steaks in the bar arrived just as ordered. Looking forward to returning again soon.

Visited with my partner and had a great steak and chips, she had crab cocktail and Cajun chicken burger - both meals were delicious and beautifully presented , I would highly recommend to come here and enjoy dinner in the bar lounge and a coffee in the library area afterwards

Well what can i say other than the ulbster arms in halkirk,most friendley place in the highlands,very clean,a wjde range of food on the menu,all fresh daily,the bar has a wide range or beers and wines,the staff go out there way for customers,,HOLLY who welcomes everybody with a smile is a credit to the ulbster arms nothing is of any problem to her,keep up the fanstastic work you di HOLLY,

Jess and her staff can’t do enough for you nothing is ever a problem to them, excellent accommodation, the food is always superb would highly recommend staying here , The hotel caters for holiday makers and salmon fishers , with fishing available on one of the best salmon rivers in the UK
