With panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, The Bay Motel overlooks Halfmoon Bay on Stewart Island. It features a nearby golf course, a free shuttle service and free private parking on site.
All modern apartments include a seating area with satellite TV and a kitchen with fridge, microwave, tea/coffee making facilities. Rooms open out on a private balcony, with views of the bay or surrounding bush. The spacious rooms also offer free WiFi, electric blankets and individually controlled central heating.
Laundry service is available upon request. There is also a barbecue area in an undercover courtyard.
The Bay Motel is a 5-minutes’ walk from shops and restaurants; its location allows many hiking and trekking possibilities in the native forests of Rakiura National Park.

We had a lovely stay at The Bay Motel. The location was great and the room was very comfortable and clean. Vicki is a wonderful host and had great recommendations. Highly recommend!

An incredibly spacious room and bathroom, with a delightful deck and the most glorious views of the bay! Very well equipped kitchen and everything extremely clean and tidy. Warm and cosy and very quiet! Enjoyed a visit from a kea on our deck one afternoon and the sunsets were amazing! Helpful hosts and just a short walk from all Oban amenities.

It is a great location near the town and has lovely views of the area. Lots of bird life right outside your balcony. The owners were so helpful and provided a shuttle service to airport depot and ferry. Very friendly, helpful service. Laundry is a bit pricey, but so is electricity on the island. Clean, comfortable rooms. Lots of space. Great BBQ area outside. Looking forward to our next stay there! Best place to stay in Oban by all accounts.

The Bay Motel provided an excellent experience when I visited Stewart Island in October. The innkeeper picked me up at the ferry in the evening and not only drove me to the hotel but also provided a lot of solid information on what to see and do while on the island. He also drove me back to the morning ferry when I left later in the week. The room was clean and comfortable; the kitchenette very functional; and the views of the harbor spectacular. In addition, the motel is very close to the trailhead for the Fuchsia Track, an easy and enjoyable way to experience birds and native plants. I would return to the Bay Motel any time!

Very enjoyable with lovely views across Oban. Nice bird sounds in the mornings. Our host very kindly picked us up from the Stewart Island wharf and dropped us back at the conclusion of our stay. It is a few hundred meters into town, which I managed to do even with my walking stick. The motel is tidy, clean and well maintained.

We paid $440 for 2 nights in The Bay Motel. No major complaints but the place was a bit "tired". It had the typical uncomfortable motel couches which you sink into and a strange no cooking bacon rule for the kitchen. We were surprised to see our deck continue right around the building which gave me a feeling of insecurity. Otherwise our stay was ok. We had heard that Kaka sit on the deck railings and saw that as a huge drawcard as we love birds, but they were very scarce until one single bird finally visited us in the evening. A shame you are not allowed to feed them as that would be a wonderful attraction.

We flew to the island and the motel met us at the arrivals near the beach. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a balcony giving us a view of the bay. We enjoyed the continental breakfast. The owner went out of her way to buy new umbrellas for us to borrow as it was wet. The harbour and beach are a short walk away and the fish and chips near the beach are excellent!

We stayed here 3 nights. The hosts met us at the ferry and took our luggage up the hill to the hotel. We chose to walk up but others rode in the van. Our room was large and comfortable. We got a continental breakfast for an extra charge but we had it in our room. We had a small kitchenette. My only complaint was not observing our do not disturb sign. We slept odd hours due to a late kiwi walk and we're awakened to have our breakfast delivered for the next day.

We stayed here for one night in January 2024. When we arrived on the ferry there was someone waiting for us to take us in the motel van to the motel and, on the day that we left, they took our bags down to the ferry, which meant that we didn't have to return to the hotel and pick them up ourselves. That was good service. The motel is located just a few minutes' walk from the ferry terminal, very slightly uphill. Everything in Oban is close, so it's just a few minutes away from the information centre, supermarket, restaurant etc. Our room was very large for the two of us with a Queen(?) bed, single bed, and a sofa bed. The room had radiators, so that would be good on a winter's day. We would be happy to stay here again if we return to Stewart Island.
