I went to the Ashdown for an evening meal today and as a lover of all types of fish, I ordered a smoke salmon starter and a fish and chip main. The smoked salmon was delicious although the brown bread was very rubbery and there was no butter. As for the fish and chips, the first piece of Fish was perfect and I really enjoyed it, however, when I cut into the second piece I could smell it was gone off. I tried a small bit but had to spit it into a napkin. The thick cut chips were okay but some of them were pure black, as in rotton not burnt. When the waitress asked if everything was OK I felt obliged to give feedback on the fish. I assume the next person who visited the table was from the kitchen staff. I was informed that the chef had tasted said fish and according to the chef, the fish was perfect and that the "off" taste and smell was due to the the beer or vinager in the, very nice, thin crispy batter. The long and the sort is, I eat fish at least 5 days a week, and like a farmer knows his beef a commercial fisherman knows his fish. Thank you Shane for the very polite attention. I was at no point looking for a free dinner, nevertheless €4.85 off €70.60 bill was a bit insulting. And the justification for that was to say "well you did eat one piece of fish". Note to the Chef: If you believe that piece of fish was perfect then maybe consider a new career.
