I stayed at this hotel 3 years ago and it was my favorite hotel out of a 2 week trip around Norway. This stay was distinctly different. Pros: - Incredible location with gorgeous view over the fjord - Rooms with balconies have stupendous views - Lovely atmosphere with lit candles abounding - Modern tasteful decor - Ice machine, an extreme rarity in European hotels - Self-serve 24 hour coffee, hot chocolate and tea station - Convenient parking, no long walks with luggage needed - Breakfast buffet is very good, though I miss the made-to-order waffles with brown cheese. I tried adding brown cheese to a warmed up waffle but it wasn’t the same. Anglophones will be pleased to see baked beans and eggs prepared in all the ways you could wish for. The scrambled eggs were moist and tasty. The bacon was very good and crispy- a rarity abroad. - Excellent Dyson heating fan that would warm the room in minutes Cons: - I had planned to do laundry at the hotel as past reviews mentioned this being available. Unfortunately, the machine is broken. To be fair, the hotel does not presently list this as an amenity. I suppose this applies to the laundry at the campsite below as the owner didn’t mention that option when I inquired about doing laundry. - One window blind was broken and stuck in the closed position, the one that afforded the best fjord views. - Cleanliness of room was sorely lacking. The toilet had hairs and fecal matter. The coffee/tea caddy was covered in dust. The floors around the perimeter of the rug were dirty. A pillow case and towel were stained- so not sure if clean. When I asked for additional pillows I was attempted promptly and cheerfully, to be fair. - This probably falls under cleanliness but it deserves it’s own mention. By far the worst feature of this hotel is the use of natural fiber rugs in the rooms. I think these are sea grass. These rugs look great. I have had sisal rugs in my home. We remove our shoes in my house. Natural fiber rugs should never exist in a hotel room. These rugs cannot get wet so they cannot be shampooed. They are difficult to get thoroughly clean with a vacuum. Having these rugs in a hotel room is egregiously unhygienic. 3 years ago during my stay the room was cleaned to a high standard and the rugs looked okay. During this stay the rugs looked gross. Public areas also have natural fiber rugs but that is a different scenario, it isn’t a living space. The hotel probably likes the rugs in the rooms because they protect the floors but, really, the filthy things should be tossed. - Dinner buffet was disappointing. There is a large selection of shellfish on offer. If you are the type who likes to pile your plate high with shellfish, you might fare well. I don’t eat shellfish but there were other offerings to compensate. On my last visit the food was delicious. This time the lasagna was still very good. The bread and heavenly whipped salted butter were amazing. The chocolate cake was delicious, with fabulous homemad
