Ahu Bay is a lovey small boutique hotel offering outstanding service, great food (with a chef that addresses guests personally during their stay to ensure they are well catered for),and absolute peace and privacy. While expensive, it is a little oasis and a wonderful break from the chaotic coastline between Colombo and Galle. My family loved the gifted box of tea given on our departure.

We chose Ahu Bay for the first stint of our honeymoon in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. ... and it was the perfect first leg! Our room was huge, overlooking the beautiful bay, bed was comfortable, bathroom large and practical. Service impeccable and friendly, with our "host" always helping us through WhatsApp. All meals where great, with both traditional curry options and international dishes. Point for improvement: Beverages always took ages to arrive. When ordering a glass of wine, it should come to the table before the first dish 15-20 minutes later. Location is really great: You get to see wonderful sunsets from the open restaurant/lounge/pool room, and the beach is 20 meters from the hotel. Keep in mind: All beaches in Sri Lanka are public. This is something Sri Lankans are proud of, and rightly so, but it also means that there will be people right outside the hotell being VERY eager to sell their services. This is of course not the hotel's fault, and while we unfortunately ran into a rather aggressive man, who was angry we didn't chose his tuktuk services, the hotel's personell kept an eye out for him after we mentioned the altercation, and were "present" from then on, so that we felt totally safe on the beach after that. While our stay at Ahu Bay was romantic and luxurious, some words about getting there need to be said: Traffic off the highways in Sri Lanka is TERRIBLE. On the regular roads, buses drive extremely aggressively, overtaking cars that overtake tuktuks that overtake bikes and pedestrians - all at the same time. So: Chose your means of transportation carefully! We got a taxi from the official taxi stand at the airport outside Colombo, and luckily, our driver was a careful family man, who never took any chances. For shorter journeys in Sri Lanka, we sometimes used Uber and tuktuks, and found ourselves in several extremely dangerous situations. We stuck to our initial driver for all longer journeys, and wholeheartedly recommend doing the same, if you find someone who drives safely. Most drivers actively want to give you their WhatsApp, so it's easy to stay in touch. Ahu Bay is in a rather remote area of the SouthWest coast, underdeveloped when it comes to tourism. Hikkadua beach is only a half an hour drive away, a beach town where you can swim with giant turtles, and is highly recommended as a day trip. Later on our journey, we stayed at Cape Weligama, a sister hotel of Ahu Bay, and should we visit Sri Lanka again, we will definitely try a third hotel in the Resplendent Ceylon hotel group, the Wild Coast Tented Lodge. That's how seriously this hotel group takes hospitality: We trust they will be great next time too!

AHU Bay – Beautiful but…A disappointment .. Who’s It Really For? After 40+ years of traveling the world, from the finest five-star hotels to the quirkiest (and often more fun) two-star stays, we spent three weeks exploring Sri Lanka. We stayed at Wild Coast Tented Lodge (outstanding), Eraeliya Weligama (outstanding), Uga Chena Yala (decent), and Ceylon Tea Trails (great). AHU Bay was next on our list—full of promise, but ultimately, a disappointment. Let’s start with the positives: ✔️ Stunning location with some of the best sunsets in Sri Lanka. ✔️ Beautiful rooms and even better bathrooms. ✔️ A professional, friendly staff that’s truly five-star caliber. But here’s why we cut our stay short from two nights to one: ❌ There is absolutely NOTHING to do nearby. You’re stranded. No charming village, no walks, no real activities—unless you count contemplating your life choices. ❌ The beach? Looks great in photos but is a bit rocky and rough frankly almost unswimmable. ❌ The pool? Gorgeous but miniature. If two people do a lap, it’s practically a traffic jam. ❌ Sun loungers? Not enough for everyone. Want to relax by the pool? Hope you enjoy standing…And no parasols protecting you from the scorching sun… ❌ The food? Ambitious but underwhelming. The kind of meal where you nod politely but secretly wish you’d just made the effort to take a Tuk Tuk to find a beach shack with better and much cheaper food ! A fun fact is that the wine list is decent but the prices for a glass of wine is what we would pay in an expensive European restaurant. Now, management will likely protest, insisting this is a five-star resort. But let’s be honest—it feels more like a solid four-star at best. And the real question is: Who is this hotel actually for? • Families with kids? Nope—nothing for them to do. • Honeymooners? Maybe, if they don’t mind a sleepy, isolated stay. Or spending plenty of time on Tuk Tuk.s. • Older, well-traveled couples (like us)? Only if they have zero interest in activities or adventure. Final Verdict? A beautiful hotel, with fantastic staff, but in the wrong place and missing the mark on what makes a luxury stay truly worth it.

Would have expected to be informed and made aware of this construction when we made the reservation! Rooms are nice but not as private as expected (even the villa with pool). Service can be improved and is rather slow. Beach area is very nice.
