Our second trip of 2022 was also our second trip of the year to Macaronesia, this time the volcanic archipelago of Madeira and the island of Madeira itself - officially an autonomous region of Portugal but looking at its geography clearly a part of the African continent. Easter Weekend Three hours and twenty-five minutes after taking off from Manchester we landed at Funchal Airport. What was immediately evident was the difference between Madeira and Cape Verde. Both groups of islands travelled along the same trajectory until Cape Verde sought and won indepence. Whilst Cape Verde craved investment and infrastructure Madeira basked in the benefits brought about by being part of Europe. Day 2 Good Memories Lodge: A restored town house on a quiet street near to the town hall. The town house has been converted into a number of apartments over three floors. The restoration is very envogue in that it is contemporary without a mash of garish colours or tacky trinkets. The communal areas were spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained. Apartment 3 was our home for the week - calling it an apartment was an understatement as it was a self contained bungalow located in the rear courtyard with its own outside garden and patio area. The apartment was again tastefully and beautifully decorated with all the amenities one would expect from a self-catering let. With the exception of a fan oven there was literally everything a modern kitchen would have - those who want a utility room should book one of the other apartments. Personally I'm not interested in laundry whilst on holiday. A wide screen TV, thoughtful hanging and storage areas. Superb lighting for every mood and ideal socket placements. Even the bathroom is lit by a lightwell and a space saving pocket door. If we were in any doubt that they had considered the needs of guests there was even a small set of steps to allow the vertically challenged to reach the higher cupboards - well done. The service was very good with help on hand at the end of a phone. Really there is nothing to complain about, top marks. *It must be said that there is a hospital under construction on Rua Câmara Pestana that ajoins the courtyard to the side and rear. The site is open between 8am and 7pm during which time there are increased noise levels. In addition; when the wind blows in the direction of the lodge dust falls onto the courtyard. This is obviously beyond the control of Good Memories Lodge. Besides, the sentence "Can you stop building that life saving hospital because there is dust in my piña colada" has never been said in the history of mankind. When the building work has concluded the garden is a lovely little suntrap especially in the afternoon. Overall a great place that we thoroughly recommend.
