Arrived at the Hotel on 18th January after a battle getting our bags at Geneva. An hour and a half for them to arrive meaning we missed our coach but Crystal arranged a minibus for us. First impressions of the hotel were good, reception staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful booking us in . We had a standard room and a superior room. The standard room is tiny 15 metres square where the superior was 25 metres square. I think it was well worth the extra to have a superior room and a balcony. The room had a kettle with tea/coffee provided. It was nice to have beds that could be seperated, mattresses were comfortable and pillows of high quality. Each room had a ski locker, locker room was secure needing your room key to enter and the outside door to the slopes had a code to get back in. The location of the Totem is ideal, about 50 metres from the main gondola. There are many blue and red runs with a few green runs near the town. I found the French blues runs were harder than in Italy or Austria, more like reds. We stuck to greens and blues as we are older skiers and the reds looked too tough for us especially as it was hardpacked piste. Queues at the lift stations were good during the week but very busy on Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant area had a nice atmosphere to it, tables were a good size and not too cramped. The food : Breakfast had a hot selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, small potatoes, mushrooms and baked beans. Unfortunately all of this was cold most days. I did suggest to staff that a microwave would be useful. There was an area where you could boil your own eggs which was nice and at least they were hot. Plenty of bread, yogurt, ham and cheese on the cold counter and have to say the coffee was excellent from the machines. Dinner always had a soup which we found were excellent and plenty of bread, ham, cheese and salad on the cold counter. The mains were a meat sliced for you , beef ,pork ,fish... different every day. Veges were interesting, alot of parsnip (creamed) and butternut squash , kale . The was also the choice of a pasta with sauce cooked by the staff and other dishes like tartiflette, burgers, burritos. Again unfortunately apart from the pasta, most of the food was cold. Desserts were very good, selection of very fancy individual puds like banoffee pie and lovely small individual mousse with fruit topping. The cheese selection was one of the best i have ever seen . The bar area is comfortable and bar staff attentive. To sum up the food was good but it would have been better if the hot dishes were hot. The staff were all very good, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is very clean, the housekeepers do a brilliant job. I would return to this hotel if I ever ski in Flaine again.
