Syrou Melathron

The hotel is located along Kassou, in the Vaporia district, just further up from the magnificent Church of St Nicholas. It’s located in the neo-classical mansion built in 1857, so there is a bit of history there. The building is often used for advertising shots due to its original features and location, as was during our stay. There is no parking in the vicinity of the hotel bar some tight spaces near the Police HQ further up or a large municipal (and free) car park about half a mile away. We stayed in Room 2 on the ground floor, which is probably the grandest room in the hotel. It was a mezzanine arrangement, the main bedroom with a huge bed on the lower floor and two smaller beds on the upper. Both rooms were sumptuously decorated and there was plenty of seating available. Being on the ground floor we were close to the street although double glazing and heavy curtain muffled any outside noise. There was a large wardrobe with a safe box. Coffee-making facilities were provided. WiFi signal was good, AC worked perfectly. The bathroom on the upper floor was rather tight and separated from the main room by glass partitioning. Slippers were provided. Breakfast was served on the terrace on the second floor, which doubles as a bar in the evenings; we used a small lift to get there. You chose items from the menu and they were served by friendly staff. In common with all hotels in Cyclades, any coffee was a payable extra. The hotel did not provide evening meals although with a plethora of restaurants downtown, within walking distance, there was really no need for one. We mainly patronised restaurants in the Kiparissou area – they served great food and were excellent value for money. For that romantic atmosphere we went to Mazi restaurant, just off the main square.

Hotel was a real treat. Originally built as harbourmaster's house 150 years ago and beautifully converted into a hotel 24 years ago. Great elevated location overlooking the ocean. Great breakfast. Lovely swimming off the rock platforms below hotel which is well sheltered from prevailing North wind. Lovely restaurant, Sta Volparia ,just below hotel. 5 min walk into town and when you arrive on ferry ,there is a free city shuttle bus every 30 mins that takes you right up to hotel. The city of Ermopoulis is really lovely with marble streets and grand buildings - we really loved our stay here. Highly recommended.

Great location next to St Nikolas amazing Greek Orthodox Church overlooking the Vaporia historic area of the Syros capital. Parking is a problem as closest parking area was 500m which can be a problem with the summer heat. Breakfast is being served in a nice terrace with great views. Rooms are clean and well equipped. The big problem we found in our two day stay in this hotel were the people hosting us. We felt unwelcome. Their attitude was cold and distant although just short of being rude. It was like they were doing us a favor... Especially the person in charge of breakfast really needs to rethink his behavior not only towards guests but also towards stuff. It is a pity as this hotel could offer an amazing experience if run properly.

The location of this hotel is excellent if you want to be near the city's center, It is a small but well furnished -quite old fashioned, though,hotel. Clean and with quite friendly personnel. The disadvantages are the wi-fi situation - they give you a ticket for limited access either for 72 hours or a specific amount of data with very poor signal and if you have more than 1 devices you have to ask every time for another ticket. The breakfast was not full of choices but all in all quite good except for the fact that if you want an espresso or cappuccino they charge you extra. The prices of the bottled water are also over the roof so don't buy it from there.

I booked this hotel last minute via phone (1 day befoire arrival) following an ad in Syros city map I collected on one of the Cycladic island -- fortunately one room was still available. The hotel turned out to be a 19th-century mansion -- quiet and aristocratic. Our room (1109) was overlooking a terrace facing Aegean sea -- quite a dramatic view in fact. The room itself was medium-size, cozy and very clean, with small balcony and exquisite stucco ceiling. Perfectly air-conditioned. The owner greeted us personally with warmth and took his time to provide us with touristic advice. The town of Ermoupolis itself is special, very different from other towns of Cycladic islands, due to its Roman touch. I hope to return to Ermoupolis one day and I will stay at Syrou Melathron again.
