Sporthotel Ellmau in Tirol

Due to severe weather conditions the authorities gave a travel warning for this area. The hotel refuses to move our planned trip by 3 weeks demanding the full price according to it’s cancellation policy. I understand policies, they define rules for regular context. With the current weather forecast travelling to this area can be dangerous. This I consider not a good customer service.

Sporthotel Ellmau. We stayed here with family in August 2023 and we also stayed here in the summer of the previous year. We were very impressed with the hotel, the staff, our room and the excellent food. The Sport is a very large hotel, is situated near to the centre of Ellmau village and the Astberg chairlift is nearby. Ellmau has plenty of facilities such as cycle hire, gift shops and supermarket with plenty of beautiful walks and hiking routes. The Sport Hotel is a very beautiful building built in traditional Tyrolean style. The staff are very helpful, friendly and polite. Despite its large size it’s warm and welcoming. There are plenty of facilities in the hotel. The weather in early August 2023 was not so good but there was a large lounge area with plenty of comfortable seats. There are excellent spa facilities and a gym. There is also an indoor and outdoor pool which is beautiful in its design and a third indoor pool which is for adults only within the main spa area. On the lower level, a jacuzzi and numerous steam rooms and saunas of various temperatures, ideal after a long day walking or skiing if you visit in winter. The beautiful restaurant and food. This is another fantastic feature of the hotel. The restaurant is divided into separate intimate eating areas with different themes. Modern theme, classical theme or Tyrollean theme. We eat in the in the traditional Tyrollean style Baeurnhof stüble. The food is excellent, of high quality and a lot of attention made of its delightful presentation. There are fully cooked breakfasts with eggs, scrambled, fried or boiled. Very nice bacon, sausages and various hams, cereals, fruits and many more foods. A news letter is provided on your table each morning with suggestions of daily activities in and around Ellmau. Evening meal main course is chosen at breakfast time and there are 4 main options including a vegetarian option a fish option and two choices of soup. There are 5 courses. An appetiser, a soup and then salad from buffet. Main course and then a choice of desserts the from buffet. A delicious children’s menu is also provided for younger guests. During the week there are several themed evenings such as pasta buffet night which has a range of very tasty good quality pasta dishes. Also an antipasti evening and an excellent Friday Tyrolean farmers buffet with beautiful cuts of meats, vegetables and other delightful local cuisine. Drinks are served to your table and can either be paid for at the end of the meal, at reception or at the end of your stay. There is an excellent choice of wines to suit your meal. Beers and soft drinks are also available. My room was excellent and very clean with a proper bath and shower. The rooms include a free safe for valuables and comfortable furnishings. The Sport is our 'benchmark' hotel & we have visited almost yearly since 2007, having previously travelled independently by car (including with our dog)/fly-drive/Inghams package last year (cv19 - Uk gov decree). All is excellent: Location Indoor/outdoor pools Restaurant: quality & choice of food with Friday's weekly Farmer's buffet & Sunday Gala dinner. Our wonderful waiter Bernardo with beautiful waitress Marianne. Entertainment most evenings with professional pianist Robert Zimmerman on Mondays who plays superbly for over 2hrs without any sheet music! The hotel has a continuous programme of refurbishment in public rooms & bedrooms/suites but its comfort is 5* & maintains its traditional Tirolean charm. Sadly since cv19 the bar remains closed due to staffing issues before dinner. But service throughout the day on the terrace & to the outdoor pool & gardens is a real treat.

This beautiful hotel never ceases to amaze us with the comfort and cuisine. We unfortunately had poor weather for the duration of our visit which was one week, but the comfortable seating areas did help and of course the swimming pool, and spa areas also a fitness centre. Our accommodation was excellent with the traditional tyrolean style room with carpeting on the floor, and a beautiful view if the Wilder Kaiser Mountains. It seems the majority of the rooms are being changed to more city style, I hope this hotel,does maintain its Tyrolean comfort. Our room was thoroughly cleaned every day, to an excellent standard! The restaurant we were in is traditional pine style, the other restaurants have a black chairs and like booths, again more city design, but tastefully decorated. Only three small niggles, the scrambled eggs at breakfast on our past visits were the best ever tasted but this visit, not the same, perhaps ready made egg liquid, I don’t know…. maybe it’s just me.. The cake buffet on Sunday a lovely special treat, the cakes were 3 varieties squares of cake which was still slightly frozen, but no ice cream or anything for children, but it was served indoors… perhaps that’s the reason The usual slippers in the swimming bag with the gowns were no longer available, I relied on these to go to the pool, so was barefooted. As these niggles are so small they did not have a negative impact on our holiday whatsoever. I just want the scrambled egg like it was … This hotel has everything guests need, and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel in this beautiful tyrolean village of Austria. We have stayed at this hotel previously and it never failed to disappoint us, hence why we have returned. Accommodation We stayed as a family occupying 3 rooms, which were carpeted and beautiful with 2 rooms overlooking the Wilder Kaiser Mountains the 3rd room was overlooking the Ellmauer Alm peaceful countryside. All rooms were equipped with a bowl of fruit on arrival, a sitting area and immaculately clean. Restaurant The restaurant was very well managed by the lovely Yvonne, greeting us with champagne on arrival together with a very warm welcome. Our granddaughter had her 3rd birthday whilst staying, and we were greeted with a beautifully decorated table and sitting area for her. We were in a smaller farmhouse type restaurant which I specifically requested, it was very comfortable and bright. The food well I don’t know where to begin, it was excellent with small delicacies, the quality was exceptional, and the various speciality cuisine, Farmers Buffet, Gala Buffet, Pasta Buffet, Antipasti very good. The breakfasts exceptionally healthy, with an extensive buffet, fresh bread rolls, preserves farmhouse butter, cereals, porridge, fresh fruit. cold meats, in addition to hot food, eggs cooked to one’s liking, scrambled eggs which were delicious, bacon, sausages, remembering my very favourite Kaiserschman. which is cut up pancakes fried I think with icing sugar mmmmm delicious or as the language says ‘lecker’ All the waiting staff are very cheerful. Amenities Swimming area fantastic, with saunas etc etc. outside a beautiful grassed area with sun beds and day beds to relax and unwind, including adult swings. There is a childrens playroom and a pool table which is free. The hotel offers beautiful comfortable lounge areas to sit, relax play board games, with often music playing. If the weather wasn’t good then you have the benefit of the comfort. Reception Most helpful polite and understanding of my English and attempts at speaking German. The only slight disappointment being the cake buffet being only on Sunday afternoon, I think it could be extended perhaps in line with the other 2 big hotels in the village, but do I really need cake?…… I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a comfortable stay with excellent cuisine in spacious surroundings. I've stayed at many of these alpine wellness hotels and I have to say, this one is my least favorite. There are a few positives. First - I have a beautiful room, with nice views of the mountains. However the balcony I have is so small that it's really not usable. Plus it's connected with the balcony of the room next door and they have a baby, so it's not peaceful. Dinner last night was fine, but nothing spectacular. No one ever stopped by my table and asked if I'd like another glass of wine or something else to drink. On the positive side, I did like the dessert buffet. Breakfast this a.m. nothing particularly special. All of the standard items you'd find in any hotel. Normally these wellness hotels have an amazing breakfast spread. Probably the most disappointing - I planned to spend my last 4 days here and expected to enjoy the wellness area and relax before returning home. But the wellness facilities don't open until 3:00! Had their web site mentioned that, I would never have booked here. Today it's raining and it would be so nice to utilize these facilities. If there wasn't a cancelation penalty, I would check out tomorrow and find a better place for my last 2 days. Despite the good or the bad, a review comes down to one basic question - would you stay here again? And sadly my answer would be no.
