I rarely write reviews but I’m so glad we stayed at Gringo Perdido. It’s a hidden gem — gorgeous accommodations, fantastic food, attentive staff, and plenty of activities (or hammocks if you just want to relax and enjoy the view.) Our family of five was very comfortable in two rooms, and the kids would have been happy had we stayed at the hotel the entire time — they loved the kayaks, SUPs, floaties, pool, lake, docks and hammocks and self-entertained happily for hours. Still, the sunrise tour to Tikal was the highlight of the trip. It’s worth getting up at 3am to be the first ones in the park and see the jungle awaken. Ask for Luis, he’s a biologist/botanist/ecologist/archaeologist who was born and raised in Tikal and he is the best tour guide ever! We felt so lucky to have him showing us the flora, fauna, and culture of Tikal. We saw a lot of wildlife and learned about the healing properties of local trees & plants. Would absolutely stay here again and wish we’d stayed longer! Oh and don’t miss the massage… the massage platform is surrounded on 3 sides by the lake, and it’s pretty amazing to get a massage while listening to the lapping lake water, the cries of howler monkeys, the calls of birds, and feeling the gentle tropical breeze off the lake.
