We went to the Wirtshaus restaurant last night and the experience was broadly positive. The dining room has been tastefully refurbished and is welcoming and pleasant. It is also dog friendly which is a positive. However, after a satisfactory meal, we got a surprise when the bill was brought. A carafe of tap water, at most 1 litre, was charged at €4.50, the first time I have EVER been charged for tap water in Austria. We had also ordered beer and wine, which were charged separately, so water was not the only beverage on the bill. When the charge was challenged, the waiter commented that it was the owners' policy, although he appeared apologetic for it. Ah well, that will be the last time that I pay for tap water in a country where you could buy 5 litres in a supermarket for half that price, or from any stream for nothing.
