If I could give more than five stars I would! Forty Winks is every bit as good as all the other reviews suggest. We (my husband and I) met all three staff, George, Ellie and Jess and they were all extremely welcoming, friendly and clearly very good at what they do. We had one of the smaller bedrooms which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted, and very comfortable. The house is beautifully decorated and obviously very well cared for. The breakfasts, whether cooked by George or Jess, are delicious and definitely set us up for a day’s sightseeing. But the thing that made Forty Winks and its staff so special for us was how they reacted when I went over on my ankle and heard a crack! Jess was on duty, provided me with ice to put on the ankle immediately, rang a taxi to get me to A and E, and was just so caring and concerned. When we returned from A and E, me with crutches and a moon boot for my now broken ankle, George (and Jonathan the owner who happened to be there at the time) were again so kind and concerned - and the following morning George even offered to bring me breakfast in our room if that would help. And when we next saw Ellie she showed the same concern and desire to make things as easy as possible as Jess and George. Clearly this was not the ‘break’ in Durham we had planned, but without the kindness of everyone at Forty Winks it would have been much worse. We hope to be back for a trouble free break in Durham in the not too distant future, and will definitely go back to Forty Winks.

We would definitely return to 40 Winks - from our warm welcome to our friendly goodbye it was a delightful stay. The room was really comfortable and spotless, and had everything we needed. Location central. Breakfast was delicious. Thank you

Absolutely faultlsss, second time we've stayed.. Beautiful hotel, room was amazing with beautiful viewsl. Sat in the bubble bath at 7.15am with sun shining in the room, views of the cathedral watching squirrels run up the trees...so very peaceful. George and staff were exceptional, very professional, friendly and accommodating. Perfect location, a minutes walk to shops/bars but set away in am idyllic, picturesque street. Definitely be back, can't recommend enough.

A fabulous property in an excellent location a few minutes walk from the cathedral, castle, shops and restaurants. Manager George gave us a warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was lovely and breakfast is great! I highly recommend this property ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a great little hotel in a brilliant location. So much value for money, the manager and chef was brilliant and made us feel more than welcome. The decor throughout is as stunning as the views from the bedroom window. We had the gala room with a roll top bath looking straight out to the cathedral. Can't wait to go again.

This was a little jewel of a find. Tucked away on South Street in Durham. Street parking cost approx 6 pounds for 23 hours. 5 mins walk to City Centre. Breakfast included in price, cater for vegetarians. King size large room, bed, bath tub & shower, all clean & top quality. Amazing views of the cathedral and castle, all accessible within ten min walk. Great cocktails available in a small bar area with an atrium area to enjoy the night air. Water and treats available in the room, including a decanter of whiskey to enjoy a night cap. The fabric of the refurbished house is indulgent. George and the staff very friendly and helpful. Cracking experience. Thank you.
